The centre gives premature, low birthweight and other at-risk infants access to the life-saving benefits of breastmilk and a better start in life

KATHMANDU, 19 August 2022

Nepal’s first-ever Human Milk Bank opens today. Right Honorable President of Nepal Mrs Bidhya Devi Bhandari inaugurated ‘Amrit Kosh,’ at the Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital in Kathmandu today. The milk bank is an important step towards ensuring baby-friendly health systems and gives premature, low birthweight and other at-risk infants access to the vast benefits of breastmilk when they need it the most.

Every year, around 15 million babies are born preterm around the globe. In lower-middle-income countries like Nepal, an estimated 81,000 babies are born preterm. Children face the highest risk of dying in their first month of life and preterm and low birthweight babies are at even higher risk. According to the Nepal Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (NMICS) 2019, the neonatal mortality rate (number of deaths per 1000 live births during the first 28 days of life) in Nepal is 16. Similarly, the infant mortality rate (number of deaths per 1000 live births, which are under 1 year of age) is 25 and the under-five mortality rate is 28 per 1000 live births.

“Human breast milk contains the best source of nutrition and ensures survival and healthy growth of babies. It bolsters brain development and has lifelong benefits for the baby and the mother,” said Dr Bibek Kumar Lal, Director, Family Welfare Division, Ministry of Health and Population. “The human breast milk contains antibodies which cannot be found in any other sources. The early initiation of breastfeeding (in the first hour of birth), exclusive breastfeeding from birth to 6 months of age and continued breastfeeding up to 2 years and beyond together with the complementary feeding offers a powerful line of defence against infection and malnutrition and helps towards preventing deaths of infants and young children.

Exclusive breastfeeding has the potential to prevent 13 per cent of under-five deaths globally each year. Early initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour of birth in addition to exclusive breastfeeding can cut down 22 per cent of all newborn deaths worldwide.

Breastfeeding Fact Sheet: Nepal

In Nepal, only 42 per cent of children under 2 years of age are breastfed within one hour of birth and 62 per cent of children under six months are exclusively breastfed, according to NMICS 2019.

“Premature, low birthweight and small for gestational age babies are vulnerable in terms of survival and cognitive development and usually have feeding problems due to their medical conditions. Often direct breastfeeding is not possible for these babies. The next best alternative is expressed breast milk, preferably from their biological mother,” said Prof. Dr. Amir Babu Shrestha, Director, Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital.

When expressed breast milk is not adequate or available, these newborns are usually given infant formula milk. However, feeding formula milk can often lead to a high risk of developing an infection (sepsis) as well as necrotizing enterocolitis, a serious disease that affects the intestines of premature infants. It typically happens within the first 2 weeks of life in babies who are fed formula instead of breast milk. Donor human milk, if made available to these babies, can save them from the adverse effects of formula milk.

‘Amrit Kosh,’ the human milk bank at the Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital has the facilities to collect, pasteurize, test and store safe donor human milk from lactating mothers and then provide it to infants in need. The centre has been established in partnership between the Government of Nepal, the European Union and UNICEF.

“The EU in Nepal has been a long-standing partner of the Government of Nepal along with UNICEF in implementing the Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Plan, under which, promotion of breastfeeding has been a key area of focus,” said Her Excellency Ms Nona Deprez, Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Nepal. “And today, we are proud that this tripartite partnership has led to the establishment of ‘Amrit Kosh,’ the first human milk bank in Nepal. With this launch, we hope that more and more newborns unable to receive their mother’s milk can benefit from breastmilk in protecting their health and supporting their development.”

Nepal’s Multi-Sector Nutrition Plan (MSNP) seeks to improve maternal, adolescent, and child nutrition throughout Nepal by promoting healthy, nutritious, and diversified diets for adolescents, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and young children. Since 2013, UNICEF has been supporting the Government of Nepal in implementing MSNP, with funding support from the European Union.

“UNICEF is pleased to be collaborating with the Government of Nepal and the European Union in setting up the first ever Human Milk Bank in Nepal. The ‘Amrit Kosh’ – Human Milk Bank initiative is critical to advancing our joint efforts under Nepal’s Multi-Sector Nutrition Plan to improve child nutrition and particularly to address acute malnutrition of children in Nepal,” said Ms Elke Wisch, UNICEF Representative to Nepal. “Our heartful thanks goes to all the mothers who are generously donating their breastmilk to enable that children of mothers with breastfeeding difficulties – particularly preterm, low birthweight and other at-risk infants – will be able to receive the life-saving benefits of breastmilk.”

“We look forward to our continued collective efforts – with the Government of Nepal and the European Union- to moving towards more baby-friendly health facilities across the county – that support, protect, and promote optimal breastfeeding opportunities for a better start in life for every child in Nepal.”

Online Course on Infectious Disease Transmission Models for Decision-Makers

by Public Health Update August 13, 2022
written by Public Health Update

About Course

During the COVID-19 pandemic, both the promise and perils of using infectious disease transmission models to make public health policy decisions became clearer than ever. Optimal use of modeled output requires that public health policy makers be informed consumers of models, that they understand the strengths and limitations of possible approaches, and they know the right questions to ask about the vulnerabilities of the model results.

This course aims to provide anyone who makes decisions about public health policies and programs with a clear understanding of how infectious disease transmission models work, the various types and functions, and how they can be appropriately used to make decisions. There is no requirement that students have any prior background in infectious disease models and the course does not include any equations. Anyone with a basic background in public health and infectious diseases with an interest in learning more about infectious disease models will benefit from this course. In this course, participants will review the basics of infectious disease transmission models, including comparisons to other types of predictions used in daily life and an overview of the key components of a model and modeling structure.

Next, participants will delve into the types of infectious disease models: forecasting, inferential, and theoretical models. Then, participants will learn about assessing whether a model is useful, reasonable and relevant, as well as the vulnerabilities of these models. These concepts will be applied to case studies of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa from 2014-2016 and the COVID-19 pandemic. The course will be rounded out with a review of how models inform policy decisions, including major sources of uncertainty for decision making. Learners who complete this course will have a broad view of infectious disease transmission models, how to assess the usefulness of a given model, and how these models inform policy decisions.

Who should take this course?

  • Public health policy makers
  • Anyone interested in learning about how infectious disease transmission models can guide public health policy.

The development of this training was funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Review the basics of infections disease epidemiology and transmission and key components of infectious disease models
  • Present questions that can be answered by infectious disease transmission models and types of models used to answer each type of question
  • Describe how to assess whether or not a model is “good” or useful for informing policy
  • Identify the most important considerations for making decisions based on infectious disease transmission models.

Syllabus

  • Basics of Infectious Disease Transmission Models
  • Types of infectious disease models
  • Assessing the Value of an Infectious Disease Transmission Model
  • Modeling and policy decisions.

Schwarzman Scholars is a fully-funded, one-year master’s degree and leadership program at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. At the heart of the program are world-renowned advisers, a rigorous and innovative study of global affairs, and hands-on exploration of Chinese culture and commerce.

Schwarzman Scholars offers one-of-a-kind perspectives that you can’t get from a book. At the heart of the program are world renowned advisers, a rigorous and innovative study of global affairs, and hands-on exploration of Chinese culture and commerce. A year spent in China provides Scholars myriad experiences that create lifelong friendships and a valuable set of cross-cultural leadership skills.

Schwarzman Scholars is designed to meet the challenges of the 21st century and beyond. It was inspired by the Rhodes Scholarship, which was founded in 1902 in an effort to promote international understanding and peace.

Schwarzman Scholars supports up to 200 Scholars annually from the U.S., China, and around the world for a one-year master’s in global affairs at Beijing’s Tsinghua University — ranked first in Asia as an indispensable base for China’s political, business, and technological leadership.

Scholars chosen for this highly selective program will live in Beijing for a year of study and cultural immersion — attending lectures, traveling around the region, and developing a better understanding of China. Admissions opened in the fall of 2015 with outstanding success, immediately making Schwarzman Scholars one of the world’s most selective graduate and fellowship programs.

Academic Curriculum
The Schwarzman Scholars curriculum is designed to build students’ leadership abilities and deepen their knowledge of China and global affairs. In addition to the core curriculum, Scholars choose elective courses to individualize their academic experience.

They will also complete an individual or group Capstone Project, the culmination of their Schwarzman College experience. Upon completion of the program, all Scholars receive a Master’s Degree in Global Affairs, awarded by Tsinghua University.
CORE CURRICULUM

  • A course on the past 40 years of China’s political, economic, and social reform
  • A course introducing students to current and future challenges in global affairs

ELECTIVE COURSES

  • China-focused electives to delve deeper into China’s domestic policies, history, and global roles
  • Electives drawn mainly from the fields of economics, public policy and global affairs.

If the applicant’s native language is not English, official English proficiency test scores must be submitted with the application. This requirement is waived for applicants who studied at an undergraduate institution where the primary language of instruction was English for at least two years of the applicant’s academic program. The requirement will also be waived for applicants who have studied in English for two or more years at a Master’s degree level or higher. The TWAS-Sida PhD Scholarship Programme for Climate Research for students from LDCs

by Public Health Update August 13, 2022
written by Public Health Update

The TWAS-Sida PhD Scholarship Programme for Climate Research for students from LDCs has just been established in response to the need of increasing the base of expertise in climate research in Least Developed Countries, through a modern and complete PhD training programme. Under this scheme, TWAS has built a Portfolio of Host Supervisors including high-level climate experts. PhD scholarships can be awarded to promising candidates from LDCs who have obtained their MSc by December 2022, in an area relevant to the topic of climate change.

The TWAS-Sida PhD Scholarship Programme for Climate Research for students from LDCs aims to:

  • Increase the base of expertise in climate research in Least Developed Countries;
  • Contribute to fill the gap among the authors of the IPCC Assessments Reports, where scientists from developing countries are less numerous and Least Developed Countries are very much under-represented;
  • Contribute to building capacity in the context of climate change challenges in countries that are taking the brunt of the climate crisis. Climate literacy is crucial for affected societies in order to i) develop in ways that are as sustainable as possible, ii) adopt measures and policies for mitigation and adaptation;
  • Contribute to the efforts underpinning the SDGs, and Sustainable Development in general, which are jeopardized by the climate crisis, as much as is the well-being of future generations;
  • Strengthen developing countries’ endogenous capacity in science;
  • Reduce the exodus of scientific talents from the South;
  • Build and sustain units of scientific excellence in LDCs over a longer period to help them achieve a critical mass of highly qualified and innovative scientists capable of addressing real-life problems facing their countries.

The TWAS-Sida PhD Scholarship Programme for Climate Research for students from LDCs is fully funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). The contribution is intended to support climate action in a world struggling with multiple planetary crises. In particular, the United Nations categorized a group of countries as ‘Least Developed’ (https://unctad.org/topic/least-developed-countries/list): these are low-income countries, that have a great need of help and support. In terms of science and technology in particular, they are severely lagging, and this is compromising efforts of growth. It is critical to contribute to their capacity building especially in the area of climate change, which will affect the livelihood of many of their communities.

Programme details

  • “TWAS Portfolio of Host Supervisors”. The vision of this Climate PhD Scholarship Programme is to equip candidates with both research and soft skills useful to take action in the context of the challenges posed by climatic changes. TWAS selected potential host supervisors including high-level climate experts: they are listed in the “TWAS Portfolio of Host Supervisors”.
  • Selecting a scientific area of interest. To apply for this scholarship, candidates will need to fill in an application form on an online portal with a series of questions that will require written answers. Some of the questions in the application form will ask candidates to outline their statement of purpose in regard to this Climate PhD opportunity. Candidates will also need to choose a potential host supervisor among those proposed by TWAS in its ‘Portfolio of Host Supervisors’ based on the areas of scientific research of their interest. Candidates will not need to upload a research proposal, as this will need to be defined in agreement with the host supervisor, after the selections, if awarded.
  • Two possible mechanisms. There are two possible mechanisms for this PhD scholarship opportunity:
  1. FULL-TIME: Through this mechanism, you will be registered for a PhD in the host country and will spend the entire period of doctoral research there, obtaining the degree from the host institution. The host institution can be either in an LDC (https://unctad.org/topic/least-developed-countries/list) or in another country in the Global South (https://twas.org/developing-countries-south).
  2. SANDWICH: Through this mechanism, you will be registered for a PhD in your home country, which must be an LDC, and you will only carry out part of the research in the host country, spending periods (e.g. 1-3 months each year or as necessary) at another institution with a collaborating host supervisor.

Please be aware that exhaustive explanations are available in the document ‘Guidelines for Applicants’, which you can find at the bottom of this page, and which you should study carefully.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be nationals of one of the countries in the category of Least Developed Countries (LDCs), as defined by the United Nations (https://unctad.org/topic/least-developed-countries/list)
  • The maximum eligible age limit for this programme is 35 years of age for male applicants and 40 years of age for female applicants, by December this year (2022).
  • MSc must be obtained in a field relevant to topics under the umbrella of climate change, or it may be ongoing but must be completed by 31 December of the application year (2022).
  • Applications from women scientists are especially encouraged.

Scholarship

The stipend will cover the cost of food and accommodation for the stay in the country where the PhD research will take place. It also covers a ticket to/from the host country, VISA costs, and health insurance.

  • Full-time mechanism.
    The scholarship may be granted for a maximum duration of 4 years, divided as follows: 3 years of research + 1 year of thesis writing up.
  • Sandwich mechanism.
  1. Option a) Should you enroll in the first year of a PhD programme in your home country at an LDC and set up the Sandwich mechanism right away, the scholarship will cover the stipend for the entire 4 years of the PhD, plus flight to and from the host country, visa, and medical insurance.
  2. Option b) Should you be already enrolled by the time of application, or the awarding, in a doctorate in your home country or in a developing country, the scholarship will only cover the stipend for the months at the collaborating host institution and the costs of the flight to and from the host country, visa, and medical insurance.

Additional aspects that the selected applicants will benefit from

  • Publication costs/open access: awardees will be provided with support, whenever possible, to publish in open access journals.
  • Special training programmes: in order to make sure that the programme yields well-rounded experts, workshops to build soft skills and increase “SDGs Literacy” (https://sdgs.un.org/partnerships/sdg-literacy-and-relating-your-research-global-challenges) will be organized, also in collaboration with the IPCC, which endorses this programme.
  • International conference participation: awardees will be provided with allowances, when possible, to attend one conference during the period of the fellowship.

How to apply

  • Applications must be submitted via the online platform by clicking on the “Apply Now” link at the bottom of this page. Only applications submitted online will be considered.
  • A tutorial on how to apply on the online platform can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.
  • Please be advised: applicants may apply for only one programme per calendar year in the TWAS and OWSD portfolio for consideration by TWAS.

Important recommendations:
Before starting your application on the online platform, please make sure you:

  1. have carefully studied the document “Guidelines for Applicants” and understood the main mechanisms of this programme: namely both the Full-time and Sandwich options, and the TWAS Portfolio of Host Supervisors;
  2. have carefully studied the list of supervisors in the document “TWAS Portfolio of Host Supervisors”.

When to apply

  • The deadline for receiving applications is 5 October 2022 (11:59 Central European Summer Time).
  • No applications will be accepted after the deadline: therefore, we strongly recommend that you submit your application as early as possible.

Notification of results

  • Applicants who are selected for this PhD opportunity should expect to be notified of the outcome of their application by March 2023. Applicants who do not hear from TWAS by this date ought to assume that they were unsuccessful.

Contact

  • Should you have any doubts or problems applying for this programme, please contact climatephd@twas.org
Applicants are strongly advised to study carefully the document ‘Guidelines for Applicants” in order to understand properly the mechanisms of this programme.
