WHO Western Pacific Innovation Challenge

by Public Health Update September 24, 2021
written by Public Health Update

The World Health Organization in the Western Pacific has launched the first WHO Western Pacific Innovation Challenge: Innovation for the Future of Public Health. The Innovation Challenge is calling for innovators to submit their solutions to better the health and well-being of people in the Western Pacific Region.

Applications can be submitted at https://wproinnov.awardsplatform.com/.

Read below for more information.

Purpose: find tailored solutions for health in our region

The demand for health innovations in the Western Pacific is high and will continue to increase with emerging socioeconomic dynamics. In 2019, as part the For the Future vision in the Western Pacific, the Organization identified four strategic priorities to tackle over the coming five years: health security, including antimicrobial resistance; noncommunicable diseases and ageing; climate change and the environment; and reaching the unreached. In achieving this vision, For the Future calls on WHO to find new approaches through innovation to meet these challenges and future ones.

WHO in the Western Pacific has made efforts to embed innovation in the organizational culture, and is working to empower countries to chart a sustainable path to improving the health of people across the Region.

The Innovation Challenge is an opportunity for WHO to source and select innovators with profound understandings of the health needs of people in the Western Pacific and to create an ecosystem of innovators who have sustainable, cost-effective, and inclusive solutions that can address these needs.

WHO believes in the potential for both entrepreneurial forms of innovation, with new technologies, services and products that can advance the efficiency and effectiveness of public health, as well as more home-grown innovative solutions which may have explosive impact because they are already adapted to the local context potentially costing less to implement and scale.

Submission categories:

The WHO Western Pacific Innovation Challenge has five categories of submission:

  1. Covid-19 Innovation: having an immediate and future impact on COVID-19 preparedness and response, potentially improve health outcomes and quality of life, and/or offer a solution to an unmet health need.
  2. Universal health coverage: ensuring all people and communities have access to quality health services where and when they need them, without suffering financial hardship.
  3. Health security and emergency: saving lives and protecting health in all situations including health threats from disease outbreaks, natural disasters and conflicts.
  4. Healthy environments and populations: creating healthier environments, better food choices, safer settings and inclusive health services for a healthy start for every newborn, and a long life for every person.
  5. Disease elimination and control: reducing the number of new infections and efficiently treat people currently infected by a communicable disease, or affected by a noncommunicable disease.

All solutions submitted to the Innovation Challenge must be beyond the ideation stage, having gone through pilot testing to prove feasibility and ideally effectiveness. The solutions must have been adapted or be adaptable to the WHO Western Pacific Region.

Eligibility:

The Innovation Challenge is open to all public health innovators from any of WHO’s Member States, but especially those investing in the countries and areas of the Western Pacific Region, or those willing to explore opportunities there. Any person from or organization registered in any WHO Member State is eligible to submit their work.

Submissions from individuals or organizations who are working with or have worked with military, arms, tobacco, alcohol or pharmaceutical products or services, or for advertising of these commercial products or services will not be accepted. Submissions should also have not been produced with funds or any kind of support from the above-mentioned industries. Entries must also be original solutions.

Selection criteria:

The Innovation Challenge will have panels of WHO staff and industry experts to judge the submissions and select 30 finalists.

Finalists will be invited to attend the WPRO Innovation Forum to be held in February. Their solutions will be presented to representatives of WHO Member States in the Western Pacific, public organizations, partners and donors. Accelerators will also be in attendance.

The submitted solutions will be assessed on five dimensions:

  1. Innovativeness (20%)
  2. Relevance (20%)
  3. Scalability (20%)
  4. Adaptability & Viability (20%)
  5. Impact (20%)

Submission deadline:

All submissions must be received by 31 October 2021, 11:59 PM Manila Time (GMT +8).

The finalists will be selected in early January 2022 and contacted individually via email.

WHO Global Air Quality Guidelines: Particulate matter (‎PM2.5 and PM10)‎, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide

by Public Health Update September 23, 2021
written by Public Health Update

Overview

New WHO Global Air Quality Guidelines (AQGs) provide clear evidence of the damage air pollution inflicts on human health, at even lower concentrations than previously understood. The guidelines recommend new air quality levels to protect the health of populations, by reducing levels of key air pollutants, some of which also contribute to climate change.

The updated WHO Global Air Quality Guidelines (AQGs) provide recommendations on air quality guideline levels as well as interim targets for six key air pollutants. They also offer qualitative statements on good practices for the management of certain types of particulate matter (PM), for example, black carbon/elemental carbon, ultrafine particles, and particles originating from sand and dust storms, for which there is insufficient quantitative evidence to derive AQG levels.

Objective

The overall objective of the updated global guidelines is to offer quantitative health-based recommendations for air quality management, expressed as long or short-term concentrations for a number of key air pollutants. Exceedance of the air quality guideline (AQG) levels is associated with important risks to public health. These guidelines are not legally binding standards; however, they do provide WHO Member States with an evidence-informed tool that they can use to inform legislation and policy. Ultimately, the goal of these guidelines is to provide guidance to help reduce levels of air pollutants in order to decrease the enormous health burden resulting from exposure to air pollution worldwide.

Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013 – 2030

by Public Health Update September 23, 2021
written by Public Health Update

Overview

The Sixty-sixth World Health Assembly, consisting of Ministers of Health of 194 Member States, adopted the WHO’s Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013-2020 in May 2013. In 2019, the action plan was extended until 2030 by the Seventy-second World Health Assembly. Then in 2021, the Seventy-fourth World Health Assembly endorsed updates to the action plan, including updates to the plan’s options for implementation and indicators.

This updated Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013-2030 builds upon its predecessor and sets out clear actions for Member States, the WHO Secretariat and international, regional and national partners to promote mental health and well-being for all, to prevent mental health conditions for those at-risk and to achieve universal coverage for mental health services. While the updated action plan includes new and updated indicators and implementation options, the original four major objectives remain unchanged: more effective leadership and governance for mental health; the provision of comprehensive, integrated mental health and social care services in community-based settings; implementation of strategies for promotion and prevention; and strengthened information systems, evidence and research.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the infodemic around it have fuelled distrust. Trust barometers have found that distrust of societal leaders has increased and distrust of all information sources is at record highs.

At a time of uncertainty and when vaccines hesitancy remains a major hurdle, public trust in pharmacy is more important than ever before.

Three elements are necessary for trust: positive relationships, competency/expertise, and consistency.

World Pharmacists day 2021

Positive relationships Our genuine interest in our patients and time taken to listen to their needs, as well as our extra efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, have helped us to establish meaningful connections and continue to build positive relationships.

Competency/expertise We typically complete a four-year Master of Pharmacy degree or a doctorate in pharmacy, followed by a preregistration year/internship. Once registered, we undertake lifelong learning or further training to become more specialised.

Consistency As the most accessible healthcare provider in many parts of the world, working in premises that operate longer working hours than many other healthcare facilities, we and our pharmacies are more able to demonstrate, consistently, our skills and caring.

Many patient-pharmacist relationships are grounded in trust built over time. The public trusts our advice. They trust us to maintain confidentiality. More and more governments are trusting us to administer vaccines and to provide other expanded services, such as testing. Healthcare systems trust us to find solutions for medicines shortages. There are many more examples.

Funding call – The British Academy/Wolfson Fellowships

by Public Health Update September 22, 2021
written by Public Health Update

Overview

The British Academy is now inviting applications to the British Academy / Wolfson Fellowships. The application form is available online on the Flexi-Grant application system. The deadline for applications is Wednesday 24 November 2021, 5:00pm UK time.

Purpose of the scheme

The British Academy / Wolfson Fellowships provide early career academics with the most valuable commodity – time – by releasing them from some of their administration and teaching duties to pursue their research, along with funding for public engagement and travel. The award duration is three years.

These awards are designed to support early career researchers who show exceptional talent in both research and public engagement, emphasising and demonstrating the importance of academic research and creative thought at a time of rapid political and societal change.

Eligibility

Applicants should already have a full-time or part-time permanent or fixed-term post at a UK university or other research institution, such as a museum or gallery, which can provide a suitable environment and support for applicants.

Applicants should have research, teaching and other related duties from which they would need to be released in order to heighten their focus on the research and engagement supported through the fellowship.

Applicants should be within seven years of completion of their doctorate, though we also welcome applications from those researchers who have had to take time out since the completion of their PhD for maternity/paternity/adoption leave, for caring responsibilities or for periods of illness.

Level of award

The grant maximum is £130,000 across three years. Awards can be used flexibly: at least £90,000 for time buy out, and up to £40,000 for research and travel expenses and dissemination of findings.

The funding is expected to be divided: first, to buy out time of the academic duties of the award-holder in order to focus on their research goals. Secondly, for travel and public engagement across the three years of the award to help with research costs and to undertake dissemination of the findings from the fellowship research locally, nationally and globally.

Application for the scheme

Applications are available online on the Flexi-Grant application system.

Contact details

  • Application deadline: 5:00pm on 24 November 2021
  • Decisions (notification via email): by February 2022
  • Earliest start date: not earlier than 1 September 2022 and not later than 1 January 2023
