Call for Videos: “I Am a Field Epidemiologist” for World Field Epidemiology

by Public Health Update June 1, 2021
written by Public Health Update

Introduction

Organized by TEPHINET, the global network of Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs), World Field Epidemiology Day is a global movement to recognize and raise awareness of the vital role of field epidemiologists in protecting the health of populations, thus advancing global health security, and to advocate for increased investment in field epidemiology training, research, and professionals.

In celebration of the first World Field Epidemiology Day on September 7, 2021, TEPHINET is organizing a virtual event that will be free and open to the public. This event will begin with a brief video featuring field epidemiologists across the globe sharing what makes them passionate about their work.

We would like to invite FETP trainees, alumni, and staff, as well as other field epidemiologists working around the world, to participate by submitting a video in accordance with the guidelines listed below:

Recording Guidelines

  • Begin your video by saying, “My name is (name) and I am a field epidemiologist.” Then, describe what makes you passionate about your work.
  • Limit your video to a maximum of 30 seconds.
  • You may speak in any language, but if you speak in a language other than English, please submit a written English translation with your video.
  • Record the video in a quiet, well-lit environment. You can record in any location (for example, at home, in your office, out in the field, or another place that is relevant to your work as a field epidemiologist).
  • Make sure that the audio is clear with minimal background noise. Use a microphone if possible.
  • Record the video in landscape mode (if recording on a phone, please hold the phone sideways).
  • Make sure the video is not shaky. Use a tripod if necessary.
  • Look straight into the camera when speaking and ensure that your whole head is visible.
  • Speak naturally, as though speaking to a friend.

How to Submit

  • Submit your video by Wednesday, June 30, 2021.
  • Email secretariat@tephinet.org with the subject line: “Video: I Am a Field Epidemiologist.” The body of your email must include:
    • A link to the video file (in MP4, MOV, WMV, or AVI format) uploaded to any file hosting platform of your choosing.
    • Your full name
    • Your job title and country
    • A written English transcript of your video (only if the video is not in English)

Please note that, due to time considerations, we cannot guarantee that we will include every submission in the final video shown during the event, but we may feature more submissions through other channels such as TEPHINET’s social media platforms and newsletter.

Menstrual Hygiene Day: Action and Investment in Menstrual Hygiene and Health

by Public Health Update May 27, 2021
written by Public Health Update

Overview

Menstrual Hygiene Day (MH Day) is a global advocacy platform that brings together the voices and actions of non-profits, government agencies, individuals, the private sector and the media to promote good menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) for all women and girls. More specifically, MH Day:

  • breaks the silence, raises awareness and changes negative social norms around MHH, and
  • engages decision-makers to increase the political priority and catalyse action for MHH, at global, national and local levels.

MH Day has grown tremendously since it’s first celebration in 2014, observed on May 28.

The term Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) focuses on what women and girls need to manage their periods safely, hygienically, with confidence and without shame. In 2012, menstrual hygiene management (MHM) was defined by the Joint Monitoring Program (JMP) for Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene as
“Women and adolescent girls using a clean menstrual management material to absorb or collect blood that can be changed in privacy as often as necessary for the duration of the menstruation period, using soap and water for washing the body as required, and having access to facilities to dispose of used menstrual management materials. They understand the basic facts linked to the menstrual cycle and how to manage it with dignity and without discomfort or fear.”

Menstrual Health and Hygiene encompasses both MHM and the broader systemic factors that link menstruation with health, well-being, gender equality, education, equity, empowerment, and rights. These systematic factors have been summarised by UNESCO as accurate and timely knowledge, available, safe, and affordable materials, informed and comfortable professionals, referral and access to health services, sanitation and washing facilities, positive social norms, safe and hygienic disposal and advocacy and policy.

Since April 2021, there is an official definition for menstrual health. Menstrual Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, in relation to the menstrual cycle.

Vision

To create a world where no woman or girl is held back because she menstruates by 2030. A world without period stigma and period poverty.

This means a world in which every woman and girl is empowered to manage her menstruation safely, hygienically, with confidence and without shame:
– everyone can access and afford the menstrual product of their choice
– period stigma is history
– eveyone has basic information about menstruation (this also includes boys and men)
– everyone can access period-friendly water, sanitation & hygiene facilities everywhere

Mission

To break the silence, raise awareness and change negative social norms surrounding MHM around the world.
To engage decision-makers at global, national and local levels to increase the political priority for MHM and catalyze action.

Overview

The World No Tobacco Day is celebrated each year on May 31. It was initiated in 1987 to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes.

In 1987, the World Health Assembly passed Resolution WHA40.38, calling for 7 April 1988 to be a “a world no-smoking day.” In 1988, Resolution WHA42.19 was passed, calling for the celebration of World No Tobacco Day, every year on 31 May.

NEPAL–NCDS RISK FACTORS STEPS SURVEY 2019 – TOBACCO FACTSHEET

Theme 2021: Commit to quit

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to millions of tobacco users wanting to quit. However, quitting tobacco is challenging, especially with the added social and economic stresses brought about by the pandemic.

Worldwide, around 780 million people say they want to quit, but only 30% of them have access to the tools that can help them to overcome both physical and mental addictions to tobacco. Together with partners, WHO will provide people with the tools and resources they need to make a successful attempt at quitting.

Quitting tobacco has major and immediate health benefits

There are immediate and long-term health benefits to quitting tobacco. After just 20 minutes of quitting smoking, the heart rate drops. Within 12 hours, the carbon monoxide level in the blood drops to normal. Within 2–12 weeks, the circulation improves and lung function increases. Within 1–9 months, coughing and shortness of breath decrease. Within 5–15 years, the stroke risk is reduced to that of a non-smoker. Within 10 years, the lung cancer death rate is about half that of a smoker. Within 15 years, the risk of heart disease is that of a non-smoker.
