Democratic Republic of Congo declares new Ebola outbreak in Mbandaka

by Public Health Update April 23, 2022
written by Public Health Update

23 April 2022

Brazzaville/Kinshasa, 23 April 2022 – The health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo today declared an outbreak of Ebola after a case was confirmed in Mbandaka, a city in the north-western Equateur Province. This is the third outbreak in the province since 2018.

So far, just one case has been confirmed. The patient, a 31-year-old man, began experiencing symptoms on 5 April and after more than a week of care at home, sought treatment at a local health facility. On 21 April, the patient was admitted to an Ebola treatment centre for intensive care but died later that day. Having recognized the symptoms, health workers immediately submitted samples to test for Ebola virus disease. Investigations to determine the source of the outbreak are ongoing.

“Time is not on our side,” said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, the World health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa. “The disease has had a two-week head start and we are now playing catch-up. The positive news is that health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have more experience than anyone else in the world at controlling Ebola outbreaks quickly.”

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is experiencing its fourteenth Ebola outbreaks since 1976. The current outbreak is the sixth since 2018 alone – the most frequent occurrence in the country’s Ebola history. Previous outbreaks in Equateur Province were in 2020 and 2018, with 130 and 54 recorded cases respectively.

Efforts to stem the current outbreak are already underway. The deceased patient received a safe and dignified burial, which involves modifying traditional funeral ceremonies in a way that minimizes the risk of contagious fluids infecting attendees. Anyone who came in contact with the patient are also being identified and their health will be monitored. The health facility where the patient received care has been decontaminated.

WHO experts based in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are supporting the national authorities to ramp up key outbreak response areas including testing, contact tracing, infection prevention and control, treatment as well as working with communities to support the public health measures to prevent infections.

Vaccination is set to kick off in the coming days. The country already has stockpiles of the rVSV-ZEBOV Ebola vaccine available in the cities of Goma and Kinshasa. Vaccines will be sent to Mbandaka and administered through ‘ring vaccination’ strategy—where contacts and contacts of contacts are vaccinated to curb the spread of the virus and protect lives.

“Many people in Mbandaka are already vaccinated against Ebola, which should help reduce the impact of the disease,” said Dr Moeti. “All those who were vaccinated during the 2020 outbreak will be revaccinated.”

Ebola is a severe, often fatal illness affecting humans and other primates. Case fatality rates have varied from 25% to 90% in past outbreaks. There is now effective treatment available and if patients receive treatment early, as well as supportive care, their chances of survival improve significantly.

Fogarty Launching Future Leaders in Global Health Research Training Program

by Public Health Update April 21, 2022
written by Public Health Update

Overview

The INSIGHT consortia is one of many consortia that comprise the Fogarty Launching Future Leaders in Global Health Research Training Program. The purpose of the Fogarty programs is to provide mentored global health research training opportunities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) for pre-and post-doctoral candidates from the U.S. and LMICs. The program is sponsored by the Fogarty International Center (FIC) and several collaborating Institutes and Centers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

This consortium brings together four top-ranked universities, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB), and the University of Pittsburgh (UP) and their respective international research training sites in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Trainee research projects are supported by experienced and dedicated mentors with expertise in clinical, public health, laboratory, and implementation research.

Fellowship Training Program

To help train and foster the next generation of global health scientists, the Fogarty International Center and its partners at the National Institutes of Health have funded four consortia of universities to administer 12-month clinical research training programs.

The INSIGHT program partnership includes the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB), and the University of Pittsburgh (UP).

The program aims to provide the next generation of aspiring global health researchers in the U.S. and in LMIC by giving scientists, early in their careers, a mentored research training experience in global health at established biomedical and behavioral research sites.

In 1998, these institutions were among the first implementers of the Fogarty AIDS International Training and Research Program (AITRP) having provided research training that has strengthened the capacity of academic and research institutions and of research scientists globally.

Research Tracks

Our program has four Disease Tracks, four Population Tracks, and three Science Tracks that underpin the global health research and priority needs of our partner LMIC institutions. The specific activities and steering committee of the tracks can be accessed by selecting a research track below.

Disease Tracks

  • Emerging and Re-Emerging Infectious Diseases
  • HIV
  • Mental Health
  • Non-Communicable Diseases

Population Tracks

  • Adolescents and Young Women Population

World Hemophilia Day 2022: Access for All

by Public Health Update April 17, 2022
written by Public Health Update

Overview

Each year World Hemophilia Day is observed on April 17 to raise awareness on hemophilia and it’s consequences. The theme of the event this year is ”Access for All: Partnership. Policy. Progress. Engaging your government, integrating inherited bleeding disorders into national policy”. This important event is about bringing the global bleeding disorders community together. By raising awareness and bringing hemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders to the attention of policymakers, we can increase sustainable and equitable access to care and treatment.

The world continues to be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine, but one thing hasn’t: we are still in this together, and we will always be stronger together as a community in our shared vision of ”Treatment for All”.

“World Hemophilia Day is day for people who have been affected by a bleeding disorder—either because they have one, or because they care for someone who does. But we can’t forget that governments play a critical role. It’s important that they recognize bleeding disorders and assist people who have a condition in their countries.”- Cesar Garrido, WFH President.

About hemophilia and other bleeding disorders

In people with bleeding disorders, the blood clotting process doesn’t work properly, with the result that they can bleed for longer than normal, and some people may experience spontaneous bleeding into joints, muscles, or other parts of their bodies which can lead to developmental and permanent mobility issues. The overwhelming majority of people living with inherited bleeding disorders around the world still do not have access to diagnosis, treatment and care.

WHO urges accelerated action to protect human health and combat the climate crisis at a time of heightened conflict and fragility

by Public Health Update April 7, 2022
written by Public Health Update

On its founding day, the Organization seeks a re-imagining and re-prioritization of resources to usher in sustainable, well-being societies

6 April 2022 News release Geneva

On this World Health Day (April 7, 2022), WHO is issuing an urgent call for accelerated action by leaders and all people to preserve and protect health and mitigate the climate crisis as part of an “Our planet, our health” campaign marking the organization’s founding day, which falls at a time of heightened conflict and fragility.

In issuing its call-to-action, WHO notes that 99 per cent of people breathe unhealthy air mainly resulting from burning of fossil fuels. A heating world is seeing mosquitos spread diseases further and faster than ever before. Extreme weather events, biodiversity loss, land degradation and water scarcity are displacing people and affecting their health. Pollution and plastics are found at the bottom of our deepest oceans, the highest mountains, and have made their way into our food chain and blood stream. Systems that produce highly processed, unhealthy foods and beverages are driving a wave of obesity, increasing cancer and heart disease while generating up to one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions. This health and social crisis is compromising people’s ability to take control over their health and lives.

“The climate crisis is a health crisis: the same unsustainable choices that are killing our planet are killing people,” said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “We need transformative solutions to wean the world off its addiction to fossil fuels, to reimagine economies and societies focused on well-being, and to safeguard the health of the planet on which human health depends.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the fault lines of inequity across the world, underlining the urgency for creating sustainable, well-being societies which do not breach ecological limits and which ensure that all people have access to life-saving and life-enhancing tools, systems, policies and environments.

WHO’s Manifesto to ensure a healthy and green recovery from COVID-19 prescribes protecting and preserving nature as the source of human health; investing in essential services from water & sanitation to clean energy in healthcare facilities; ensuring a quick and healthy energy transition; promoting healthy and sustainable food systems; building healthy and livable cities; and stopping the use of taxpayers’ money to fund pollution.

The Geneva Charter for well-being highlights what global commitments are needed to achieve equitable health and social outcomes now and for future generations, without destroying the health of our planet.

Through its World Health Day campaign, WHO is calling on governments, organizations, corporations, and citizens to share actions they are taking to protect the planet and human health.
