World Drowning Prevention Day 2021

by Public Health Update July 25, 2021
written by Public Health Update

The World Drowning Prevention Day is observed annually on 25th July. The UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/75/273 “Global drowning prevention” assign 25 July as World Drowning Prevention Day.

This day serves as an opportunity to highlight the tragic and profound impact of drowning on families and communities and offer life-saving solutions to prevent it. It is estimated that 236,000 people drown every year, and drowning is among the ten leading causes of death for children and youth aged 1-24 years. Similarly, more than 90% of drowning deaths occur in rivers, lakes, wells and domestic water storage vessels in low- and middle-income countries, with children and adolescents in rural areas disproportionately affected.

All stakeholders are invited to mark World Drowning Prevention Day – governments, UN agencies, civil society organizations, the private sector, academia and individuals – by highlighting the need for urgent, coordinated and multi-sectoral action on proven measures such as:

  • installing barriers controlling access to water
  • providing safe places away from water such as crèches for pre-school children with capable childcare
  • teaching swimming, water safety and safe rescue skills
  • training bystanders in safe rescue and resuscitation
  • setting and enforcing safe boating, shipping and ferry regulations
  • improving flood risk management

Call for Application: Regional Peer Education Academy

by Public Health Update July 22, 2021
written by Public Health Update

Overview

Y-PEER Asia Pacific Center announces the application for the ‘Regional Peer Education Academy 2021’ with support of partner organisations, UNFPA APRO, UNAIDS, APA, IPPF SARO, Youth-LEAD, Me for Myself, UNESCO, ASAP and ARROW to increase the knowledge of Peer Education and SRHR of Young People of Asia Pacific Region. 25 Young People will be selected per batch under the Regional Peer Education Academy.

Background

Young people in most countries, particularly in the Asia Pacific Region, find it difficult to receive clear and accurate information about matters that concern them, such as sex, sexuality, substance abuse, sexual and reproductive health, HIV-AIDS, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This occurs for a variety of reasons, including social norms and taboos, stereotyping, economic deprivation, a lack of platforms, and information availability. Although the information is available, it may be delivered in an authoritarian, judgmental, or unsuited manner to the values, perspectives, and lifestyles of young people. Explaining their thoughts to others and participating in situations where they can learn from their peers help students learn a lot.

Due to the present Pandemic, there are far fewer options for delivering SRHR knowledge and peer education other than through the internet (online). Because of to the cancellation of face-to-face local , national or regional peer education training or workshops due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Regional Peer Education Academy’ proposes to fill the gaps by online capacity building of young people in the field of SRHR, mental health, and other related issues.

World Hepatitis Day 2021: Hepatitis Can’t Wait

by Public Health Update July 22, 2021
written by Public Health Update

The World Hepatitis Day (WHD) is observed to raise awareness of viral hepatitis. World Hepatitis Day aims to unite the global community to demand action from decision makers globally to prioritise the elimination of viral hepatitis. WHD is one of the World Health Organization’s officially mandated global public health days. It is a day when the world comes together to raise awareness of hepatitis, one of the most deadly and neglected diseases and health crises – one that is claiming a life every 30 seconds. Globally, 325 million people live with hepatitis, with more than 1.1 million lives lost each year to hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Yet, we have the tools to eliminate the disease by 2030.

On July 28, we raise our collective voices to call for more action for the people affected by hepatitis. Across the world, campaign supporters will raise their voices on social media, hold webinars, speak to the media and hold events to spread the message and raise awareness of hepatitis.

Objectives

1) To raise awareness of viral hepatitis
2) Communicate the urgent need for action on hepatitis now.
3) Reveal the social injustice caused by the lack of action on viral hepatitis
4) Raise the voices of the people and communities affected by viral hepatitis to demand positive action and fight stigma
5) Celebrate the global community combating hepatitis around the world
6) Call on policymakers, decision makers and global funders to join the fight to eliminate hepatitis.

With a person dying every 30 seconds from a hepatitis related illness – even in the current COVID-19 crisis – we can’t wait to act on viral hepatitis.

Hep Can’t Wait

‘Hepatitis Can’t Wait’ is the new campaign theme to launch WHD 2021. This will bring WHA and our global network of over 300 members in nearly 100 countries together to lead the campaign internationally.

Launching in May, 2021 the Hepatitis Can’t Wait global campaign highlights the need to accelerate hepatitis elimination efforts, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Alongside this, it will also highlight the social injustice and inequity caused by the current lack of action on hepatitis elimination and focus on the positive action needed to get on track to meet our 2030 elimination goals.

  1. A desk review of key documents from WHO and other partners on research on social determinants of health, including related fields such as multisectoral governance, health in all policies and health inequality monitoring.
  2. A literature review of research in the last ten years on social determinants of health, with a focus on political economy, policy and implementation.
  3. A discussion paper with a first draft of the findings to inform an expert meeting to be held in October/ November 2021.
  4. Support to the expert meeting, including writing a meeting report.
  5. A final report synthesizing the findings of both reviews and the discussions of the expert meeting, identification of key gaps, and first draft of WHO research agenda for social determinants of health, with a focus on policy and implementation.

Work duration and cost
One team of two to three researchers working under a senior researcher will be funded up to a total budget of US$ 50 000. No further funding will be provided within or beyond the project period. The activities should be undertaken between September and December 2021 (four months).

Incentive grants for young researchers from LMICs: Implementation research to scale-up national NCD and mental health-related responses for achieving SDG 3.4 (deadline: 30 September 2021)
Grants and Funding OpportunitiesImplementation ResearchNon- Communicable Diseases (NCDs)Research & Project GrantsResearch & Project Grants

Incentive Grants for Young Researchers from Low- and Middle-Income Countries

by Public Health Update July 22, 2021
written by Public Health Update

Background

The WHO Global NCD Platform and the Defeat-NCD Partnership (UNITAR) in collaboration with the Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research (WHO) intend to roll out an incentive grants programme to strengthen the capacity for implementation research in low- and middle-income countries. The programme will facilitate the development of and demand for locally-generated research to address context-specific problems and propose action-oriented solutions. The programme will also encourage partnerships among implementers, policy-makers, and researchers to identify the barriers to scaling up NCD and mental health interventions and improve the uptake of research results for effective policy and programme development.

Scope and Activities

It is intended that the grants will support research projects that address the following:

  • Identify gaps, implementation challenges, and national priorities, and propose solutions with the potential to influence policy and practices for NCD prevention and control and promotion of mental health and well-being in LMICs.
  • Engage diverse stakeholders across sectors and actors throughout the research process.
  • Explore the best strategies to create strong partnerships between governments, NGOs, the private sector, researchers, communities, and individuals (particularly vulnerable populations) to address NCD prevention and control and promotion of mental health and well-being.
  • Identify lessons about implementation and propose feasible actionable solutions within the context.
  • The results of this work may inform further research into this area in the future, including testing such practices and mechanisms in various settings.

Themes

The submitted proposals can address a wide variety of issues aimed at scaling up NCD prevention and control and promotion of mental health and well-being, establishing multisectoral and multistakeholder coordination mechanisms, and understanding innovative integrated delivery models to shift from disease-focused treatment approaches to sustainable person-centered health systems. The goal is to accelerate country-level responses towards target 3.4 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: By 2030, reduce premature mortality from NCDs through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being.

Outputs
Completed research reports with findings and recommendations;

Policy brief incorporating the outcomes of research and recommendations;
Dissemination of research findings through WHO and the Defeat-NCD Partnership conferences, webinars, and/or other media;
The Global NCD Platform, the Defeat-NCD Partnership, and the Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research, may consider a potential publication of research results of selected projects in peer-reviewed, open-access journals.

Outcome
Strengthened capacity of individual young researchers in LMICs to carry out research and act as catalysts for institutional change.

Impact
An increased critical mass of researchers with up-to-date skills to identify needs and develop solutions for scaling up interventions for NCD prevention and control and promotion of mental health and well-being in LMICs;

Production of research results with the potential to influence policy and practices for NCD prevention and control and promotion of mental health and well-being at national and global levels.

Eligibility
This call specifically targets individual young researchers, who are enrolled in accredited academic institutions (applicants may refer to the World Higher Education Database (WHED) http://www.whed.net/) and will be conducting research projects as part of their master’s degree requirements. Projects leading to a doctoral degree will only be considered if the research can be completed within 12 months from the date of the grant award.

Priority will be given to researchers based in LMICs. Proposals from LMIC researchers based in institutions of high-income countries may be considered on a case-by-case basis. In all cases, and regardless of where researchers are based, the focus of the research itself must be on LMICs.

The applicants should meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be under 35 years of age (a copy of a national passport or other valid identification may be requested for reference purposes only);
  • Be a national of LMIC and conduct research related to LMICs. Priority will be given to researchers enrolled in institutions of LMICs. The list of countries by income group is available for reference at
    https://datahelpdesk.worldbank.org/knowledgebase/articles/906519-world-bankcountry-and-lending-groups;
  • Be enrolled in a course of study at the time of application leading to a graduate degree (master’s in health or a related discipline. Doctoral degree candidates will be considered if they complete the project within 12 months from the date of the award) from an accredited university. (Applicants may refer to the World Higher Education Database
    (WHED) http://www.whed.net/ );
  • Conduct research as part of their academic study;
  • Must not be fully dependent on this incentive grant to conduct their research; proof of the availability of other funding may be required;
  • Be fluent in English, as only submissions in English will be accepted at this time;
  • The researchers should be prepared to submit their Institutional Review Board approval of projects (if required). In addition, the researcher must obtain a letter of permission from the thesis supervisor authorizing the conduct of the study and submission of the proposal to WHO and the Defeat-NCD Partnership for the incentive grant.
  • The researchers should demonstrate the availability of funding for the project as this incentive grant is intended to be complementary not a sole source of support for the research project.

Application process

  • Deadline: Thursday, 30 September 2021, 23:59 CEST, size limit per email: 7MB
  • Applications submitted after this deadline will not be considered.
  • Only successful candidates will be notified by 15 November 2021.
