International Youth Day 2021: Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health

by Public Health Update August 11, 2021
written by Public Health Update

The International Youth Day is commemorated every year on 12 August. The UN General Assembly endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August be declared International Youth Day. The Assembly recommended that public information activities be organized to support the Day as a way to promote better awareness of the World Programme of Action for Youth, adopted by the General Assembly in 1995 (resolution 50/81).

The theme of International Youth Day 2021 is, “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health”, with the aim of highlighting that the success of such a global effort will not be achieved without the meaningful participation of young people.

It has been acknowledged that there is a need for inclusive support mechanisms that ensure youth continue to amplify efforts collectively and individually to restore the planet and protect life, while integrating biodiversity in the transformation of food systems. With the world’s population expected to increase by 2 billion people in the next 30 years, it has become recognized by numerous stakeholders that simply producing a larger volume of healthier food more sustainably will not ensure human and planetary wellbeing. Other crucial challenges must also be addressed, such as the interlinkages embodied by the 2030 Agenda including poverty reduction; social inclusion; health care; biodiversity conservation; and climate change mitigation.

Overview

FEB 24-27, 2022 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The World Congress of Nephrology (WCN) is the annual scientific, educational, and networking meeting of the International Society of Nephrology. The WCN features regionally-relevant symposia, presentations, training programs, and courses, offering the latest science and state-of-the-art education in nephrology.

WCN is the perfect opportunity to meet experts and peers from around the world to share ideas and best practices.

WCN’22 is organized by the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and hosted by the Asian Pacific Society of Nephrology and Malaysian Society of Nephrology.

The ISN is proud to bring the congress to South East Asia, ensuring that kidney disease understanding, and awareness will continue to progress in the region.

The World Congress of Nephrology (WCN) highlights three scientific themes within its program: kidney failure, chronic kidney disease, and acute kidney injury.

Promoting inclusivity and equitable access, WCN’22 will host thousands of participants, including the world’s leading experts in kidney health care, to exchange the latest science and clinical applications to improve kidney health and prevent kidney disease worldwide.

GRANT

The World Congress of Nephrology 2022 (WCN’22) organizers are pleased to offer a grant program to ISN members residing in low and lower-middle income countries (see the list here). These grants encourage equitable access to the congress, providing support to ISN members with limited funds to attend WCN’22.

  • Applicants must be ISN members (ISN Full Individual member, ISN Joint Group member, or ISN Trainee) residing in a low or lower-middle-income country as defined by the ISN Low and Lower-Middle Income list which is based on the World Bank list dated June 2020 (access the list here).
Exceptions: Current ISN Fellows training in higher-income countries, ISN Sister Renal Centers (SRC) Program participants from supporting centers.
  • If you have received three previous grants to attend ISN events, you are no longer eligible to apply.
  • Priority is given to:
    • Members presenting an approved abstract at WCN’22
    • Members of 40 years and younger (born in 1981 and after)
    • Past and present ISN Fellows, SRC participants, those enrolled in the ISN Mentorship Program
  • Application deadline: October 27, 2021 (11:59 CET)
  • Grant result announcement: November 10, 2021
