Menstrual Hygiene Day: Action and Investment in Menstrual Hygiene and Health

by Public Health Update May 27, 2021
written by Public Health Update

Overview

Menstrual Hygiene Day (MH Day) is a global advocacy platform that brings together the voices and actions of non-profits, government agencies, individuals, the private sector and the media to promote good menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) for all women and girls. More specifically, MH Day:

  • breaks the silence, raises awareness and changes negative social norms around MHH, and
  • engages decision-makers to increase the political priority and catalyse action for MHH, at global, national and local levels.

MH Day has grown tremendously since it’s first celebration in 2014, observed on May 28.

The term Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) focuses on what women and girls need to manage their periods safely, hygienically, with confidence and without shame. In 2012, menstrual hygiene management (MHM) was defined by the Joint Monitoring Program (JMP) for Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene as
“Women and adolescent girls using a clean menstrual management material to absorb or collect blood that can be changed in privacy as often as necessary for the duration of the menstruation period, using soap and water for washing the body as required, and having access to facilities to dispose of used menstrual management materials. They understand the basic facts linked to the menstrual cycle and how to manage it with dignity and without discomfort or fear.”

Menstrual Health and Hygiene encompasses both MHM and the broader systemic factors that link menstruation with health, well-being, gender equality, education, equity, empowerment, and rights. These systematic factors have been summarised by UNESCO as accurate and timely knowledge, available, safe, and affordable materials, informed and comfortable professionals, referral and access to health services, sanitation and washing facilities, positive social norms, safe and hygienic disposal and advocacy and policy.

Since April 2021, there is an official definition for menstrual health. Menstrual Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, in relation to the menstrual cycle.

Vision

To create a world where no woman or girl is held back because she menstruates by 2030. A world without period stigma and period poverty.

This means a world in which every woman and girl is empowered to manage her menstruation safely, hygienically, with confidence and without shame:
– everyone can access and afford the menstrual product of their choice
– period stigma is history
– eveyone has basic information about menstruation (this also includes boys and men)
– everyone can access period-friendly water, sanitation & hygiene facilities everywhere

Mission

To break the silence, raise awareness and change negative social norms surrounding MHM around the world.
To engage decision-makers at global, national and local levels to increase the political priority for MHM and catalyze action.

The World No Tobacco Day is celebrated each year on May 31. It was initiated in 1987 to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes.

In 1987, the World Health Assembly passed Resolution WHA40.38, calling for 7 April 1988 to be a “a world no-smoking day.” In 1988, Resolution WHA42.19 was passed, calling for the celebration of World No Tobacco Day, every year on 31 May.

NEPAL–NCDS RISK FACTORS STEPS SURVEY 2019 – TOBACCO FACTSHEET

Theme 2021: Commit to quit

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to millions of tobacco users wanting to quit. However, quitting tobacco is challenging, especially with the added social and economic stresses brought about by the pandemic.

Worldwide, around 780 million people say they want to quit, but only 30% of them have access to the tools that can help them to overcome both physical and mental addictions to tobacco. Together with partners, WHO will provide people with the tools and resources they need to make a successful attempt at quitting.

Quitting tobacco has major and immediate health benefits

There are immediate and long-term health benefits to quitting tobacco. After just 20 minutes of quitting smoking, the heart rate drops. Within 12 hours, the carbon monoxide level in the blood drops to normal. Within 2–12 weeks, the circulation improves and lung function increases. Within 1–9 months, coughing and shortness of breath decrease. Within 5–15 years, the stroke risk is reduced to that of a non-smoker. Within 10 years, the lung cancer death rate is about half that of a smoker. Within 15 years, the risk of heart disease is that of a non-smoker.

World Health Statistics 2021: Monitoring health for the SDGs

by Public Health Update May 21, 2021
written by Public Health Update

  • World Health Statistics 2020: Monitoring health for the SDGs
  • World Health Statistics 2019: Monitoring health for the SDGs
  • World Health Statistics 2018: Monitoring health for the SDGs
  • World health statistics 2017: Monitoring health for the SDGs, Sustainable Development Goals – WHO
  • Overview

The World health statistics report is the World Health Organization’s (WHO) annual compilation of the most recent available data on health and health-related indicators for its 194 Member States. The 2021 edition features the latest data for 50+ health-related indicators from the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and WHO Triple Billion targets. The 2021 report additionally focuses on the human toll and impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, highlighting the importance of tracking inequalities and the urgency to accelerate progress to get back on track and recover equitably with the support of robust data and health information systems. WHO’s World Health Statistics report 2021 presents the latest data for more than 50 health-related indicators for the Sustainable Development Goals and WHO’s “triple billion” targets.

The pandemic is entering a new phase characterized by a dramatic shift of its epicentre to the developing world, jeopardizing the world’s collective goal to end it and risking further setbacks to the entire sustainable development agenda.

    Key message

    • COVID-19 poses major challenges to population health and well-being globally and thwarts the progress in meeting SDGs and the WHO Triple Billion targets.
    • Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, improvements in health were made. However, the progress is inadequate for attaining the Triple Billion targets and health-related SDGs, calling for more effective disease and injury prevention and control programmes.
    • Indicators for health-related SDGs and the WHO Triple Billion targets have seen overall improvements, but progress is not fast enough and risks being set back by COVID-19. Further acceleration is needed for addressing risk factors, scaling up universal health coverage (UHC), and strengthening capacities to detect, assess, report on and respond to public health emergencies.
    • The Triple Billion targets are critical for helping countries to accelerate the delivery of the SDGs, and require swift and enhanced political commitment and investment for achieving them by 2023. Inequalities continue to impede the achievement of optimal and equitable health gains. Strong health information systems with high-quality, timely and reliable disaggregated data are urgently needed to identify the health gaps and inequalities and to inform targeted, effective and cost effective decision-making.

    Facts

    • Health inequalities: Irrespective of the pandemic, existing inequalities, both within countries and between countries, impede appropriately targeted interventions.
    • Life expectancy and healthy life expectancy: The global population continues to live longer and live more years in good health. Between 2000 and 2019, global life expectancy (LE) at birth increased from 66.8 years in 2000 to 73.3 years in 2019, and healthy life expectancy (HALE) increased from 58.3 years to 63.7 years. Despite sharing similar increasing trends, LE and HALE among females were consistently higher than males.
    • Burden of disease: Progress in preventing and treating these diseases (especially those that tend to kill children under 5 years of age) has seen them decline significantly relative to noncommunicable diseases and injuries. Consequently, the global share of NCD deaths among all deaths increased from 60.8% in 2000 to 73.6% in 2019.
    • Leading causes of death by country income group: HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis have both dropped out of the top 10 global causes of death in 2019. Tuberculosis (TB) remains the world’s leading cause of death from a single infectious agent.
    • Universal health coverage and the health workforce: The UHC service coverage index (SCI) increasing from a global average of 45 (of 100) in 2000 to 66 in 2017. The proportion of the population with out-of-pocket spending exceeding 10% of their household budget rose from 9% to 13% and those exceeding 25% rose from 1.7% to 2.9%, over the period 2000-2015.
    • According to the data available for 2014–2020, 83% of global births were assisted by skilled birth attendants, including medical doctors, nurses and midwives.
