World Asthma Day 2023: Asthma Care for All

by Public Health Update May 2, 2023
written by Public Health Update

Overview

World Asthma Day is an annual event organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to improve asthma awareness and care around the world. GINA organizes World Asthma Day, which is held on the first Tuesday in May, in collaboration with health care groups and asthma educators throughout the world [World Asthma Day].

Asthma is a chronic disease characterized by recurrent attacks of breathlessness and wheezing, which vary in severity and frequency from person to person [World Asthma Day].

Facts (WHO)

  • Asthma is a major noncommunicable disease (NCD), affecting both children and adults, and is the most common chronic disease among children.
  • Inflammation and narrowing of the small airways in the lungs cause asthma symptoms, which can be any combination of cough, wheeze, shortness of breath and chest tightness.
  • Asthma is often under-diagnosed and under-treated, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

World Asthma Day 2023

On this World Asthma Day, May 2, 2023, the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), calls on the international respiratory communities to work together with colleagues, patients and health care providers to promote the development and implementation of effective asthma management programs in all resource countries, “Asthma Care for All”. The majority of the burden of asthma morbidity and mortality occurs in low and middle income countries. GINA strives to reduce this burden by encouraging health care leaders to ensure availability of and access to effective, quality-assured medications [GINA]

by Public Health Update May 1, 2023
written by Public Health Update

Overview

The Health Physics Society (HPS) announces the availability of travel grants and travel/worker grants for health physics students planning to attend the next annual meeting of the HPS. To be eligible for this award, a student must be a current member of the HPS, must be an undergraduate or graduate student in health physics or a closely related field with an area of concentration in health physics, must have a strong health physics career interest, and must be willing to work at the HPS meeting.

The award will consist of:

  • Free meeting registration.
  • Complimentary hotel room (based on shared accommodations).
  • Funds to assist in travel to the annual meeting.

Working at the meeting involves five half-day sessions during which the student assists in meeting rooms, in the ready room, at registration, with setup, etc. Students who receive the travel grants will have the following responsibilities: (1) students must attend the awards ceremony during the annual meeting, (2) students must attend the 4:00 p.m. student orientation meeting on the Saturday prior to the meeting, and (3) students must complete all work assignments.

Failure to satisfy the above-mentioned requirements for any reason will result in forfeiture of the travel grant. The granting of an award and the actual amount of travel funds will depend on the number of applicants and will be for students presenting a paper AND willing to work. If additional grant funding remains, students willing to work and not present will receive next priority.

Academic, Industrial, and Research Radiation Safety (AIRRS) Section Sponsorship. Students whose area of concentration is in operational health physics in university, research, or industry may apply using the student travel grant application process and receive up to $1,000 sponsored by the AIRRS Section. Preference will be given to students who submit an abstract for a poster and/or oral presentation in operational health physics. Note you are studying with a health physics concentration when completing your application.

Homeland Security and Emergency Response Section Sponsorship. Students whose area of concentration is in Homeland Security and/or Emergency Response may apply using the student travel grant application process and receive up to $1,000 sponsored by the Homeland Security and Emergency Response Section. Preference will be given to students who submit an abstract for a poster and/or an oral presentation on homeland security or emergency response. Be sure to note that you are studying with a homeland security/emergency response concentration when filling out your application.

Medical Health Physics Section Grant Sponsorship. Students with an area of concentration in medical physics or medical health physics may apply using the student travel grant application process and receive up to $1,000 sponsored by the Medical Health Physics Section. Preference will be given to students who submit an abstract for a poster and/or an oral presentation in medical health physics. Be sure to note that you are studying with a medical concentration when filling out your application.

Required Materials

Fill out and submit the HPS online travel grant application form. After you submit the form, you should receive a confirmation by email that the travel grant application has been received by the HPS. If you do not immediately receive this confirmation email, check your spam folder.

Your program director also will receive an email notification that he/she must certify that you are presently enrolled in a health physics program (or closely related program) and that you plan to attend the HPS annual meeting.

Travel grant application submittal and all supporting materials (e.g., a certification from your program director) must be submitted no later than 1 March 2023. Award winners will be notified by 3 May 2023.

NOTE: You are eligible to receive Student Travel Grant funding only TWO times during your undergraduate degree education and TWO times during your graduate degree education (FOUR times total). Once you have received travel grant funding FOUR times, you may not receive it in future years. Also, if you are a current recipient of an HPS fellowship or scholarship, so that you would receive travel funds to attend the next annual meeting, you are not eligible to receive Student Travel Grant funding within the same time period.

Students who are given this award play a vital role in the overall management of the annual meeting. Consequently, students who for any reason cannot attend the annual meeting must notify Jill Drupa (HPSApplication@burkinc.com) at the HPS Secretariat as soon as possible either before or after an award notice is received.

The HPS appreciates the student travel grant awardees. Attending the meeting with a grant is a privilege. Students are expected to engage in responsible behavior and respect the privilege of attending the annual meeting. We expect all attendees to conduct themselves accordingly, with the high standards of the HPS in mind.

Travel Origination

The travel stipend will be calculated based on distance between the academic institution and the HPS meeting.

Students must be current 2023 HPS members to apply for the travel grant.

Massive open online course on implementation research for countries in WHO South-East Asia Region

by Public Health Update May 1, 2023
written by Public Health Update

Implementation research (IR) helps design strategies or solutions to overcome bottlenecks that prevent proven and innovative public health interventions to reach the people who need them and ensure that these interventions are used in a manner that results in the outcome for which they were intended. Such solutions include how to overcome barriers to the adoption of drugs, diagnostics or preventive measures that improve health for people at risk of malaria, tuberculosis, NTDs or other infectious diseases. IR can help to ensure that health solutions reach the people who need them and are used in ways that generate intended results.

This free Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for countries of the WHO South-East Asia Region*, is a step-by-step online training that will introduce you to designing and demonstrating robust IR projects.

(*- Bangladesh, Bhutan, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste)

This course is open to all applicants. No technical or scientific background is required, though a health background would be an advantage.

You will have access to leading world experts who will take you through the core concepts of IR, including how to: identify the challenges of various health settings; assess the appropriateness of existing strategies; develop new interventions and strategies by working with communities and stakeholders; specify your IR questions; and design rigorous research projects. You will learn how to identify IR outcomes, evaluate effectiveness, and make plans to scale-up implementation.

Language: English with subtitles in English, French and Spanish.

The course starts on 8 May 2023.

To register, please send a request to: training-pkt.fkkmk@ugm.ac.id

Deadline to register: 7 May 2023

The Program will be implemented by the Ministry of Health and Population with the coordination of the Health Insurance Board at the federal level, and provincial and local governments in Koshi and Gandaki provinces to help achieve the strategic objectives of Nepal’s Health Sector Strategic Plan, 2022-2030. These include enhancing efficiency and responsiveness of the health system, promoting sustainable financing and social protection in health, and promoting equitable access to quality health services.

“The Program supports the implementation of federalism and builds on Nepal’s first Program for Results in the health sector to address the challenges of access and quality and to build a resilient public health sector,” said Dr. Feng Zhao, Practice Manager for Health, Nutrition and Population, South Asia Region. “The results achieved under this Program have the potential for scale-up to other provinces.”

The financing for the Program is complemented by a $3.84 million grant from the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response (HEPR) Trust Fund. The HEPR Trust Fund supports eligible countries and territories to improve their capacities to prepare, prevent, respond, and mitigate the impact of epidemics on populations.
