Orygen Global Youth Mental Health Advocacy Fellowship 2022

by Public Health Update January 25, 2022
written by Public Health Update

Overview

Applications are now open for the Orygen Global Youth Mental Health Advocacy Fellowship. Applications close Sunday 6 February 2022 11:59PM AEDT/ 12:59PM UTC.

The Orygen Global Youth Mental Health Advocacy Fellowship is a seven-month virtual program for up to 16 young people from around the globe who are passionate about youth mental health and want to create change in the mental health landscape of their country.

The fellowship has been established to build the capacity, skills and voices of young people to create positive change in mental health awareness, policy and systems reform.  It will provide fellows with a range of skills and support them to further develop their youth mental health advocacy project plan, designed around the needs of their communities.

The fellowship modules follow the five sections outlined in the Global Youth Mental Health Advocacy Toolkit , which was developed by Orygen as part of the Global Youth Mental Health Partnership project with the World Economic Forum.

Modules

The fellowship will consist of five modes of learning:

  1. Education modules are a core part of the fellowship and will be the platform to develop knowledge and insights for mental health advocacy. Each of the five education modules will be composed of lectures, panel discussions and/or practical workshops. These will be mostly live. Each module aims to build on each other and will include a strong emphasis on fellow interaction. Education modules will cover the following topics:
  • Module 1: Defining mental ill-health, advocacy and personal development;
  • Module 2: Safety in advocacy and sharing your personal mental health story;
  • Module 3: Preparing for advocacy and developing a proposal for change;
  • Module 4-5: Doing advocacy; and
  • Module 6: After advocacy, creating sustainable change.
  1. Expert mentoring: is used as a space for fellows to develop skills and expertise tailored to each fellow’s learning needs. These skills and expertise will help to equip the fellow with the resources and networks to enact their proposal for change. Mentoring will involve the fellow and mentor meeting monthly and is designed to be dynamic, personal and informal.
  2. Peer mentoring:  is an invaluable opportunity for the fellows to provide each other with strategic and emotional support. Fellows from diverse backgrounds and geographical areas will be paired together and will meet monthly.
  3. Contact with leaders in global youth mental health: Beyond the impact of implementing their own proposal for change, fellows will be able to network with leaders in youth mental health from around the world.
  4. Contribution: One component of the fellowship is experiential learning, which allows fellows to engage with the established work of Orygen.

HOW MUCH TIME IS INVOLVED?

The fellowship is a 7-month program due to start in March 2022. Fellows will need to be able to commit approximately 8-10 hours of time each month to fellowship activities. This will vary from month to month but will include a combination of educational modules and individual or group-based work.

Between the modules the fellows will maintain contact via an online platform to network, collaborate and share information and resources. It is expected that fellows will participate regularly in these discussions.

This is a global program and as such times may vary to accommodate different time zones of the fellows and presenters/partners. Sessions may occur very late at night or early in the morning.

WHO CAN APPLY?

We would love to hear from you if you:

  • are aged 18-30 years-old (at the time of application);
  • self-identify as having lived experience of mental ill-health personally or through family members or friends; or have a specific interest or skill in youth mental health;
  • are from anywhere in the world. We are especially keen to hear from people in low and middle- income countries;
  • you are able to challenge and offer suggestions for developing and implementing a variety of projects;
  • have a clearly defined problem related to youth mental health you wish to address and a viable advocacy plan on how you might address this problem.

All fellowship material will be provided in English.

We recognise that young people have varying identities of gender, culture, race, location, sexuality and ability, and we are committed to working in partnership with people of all backgrounds and identities to ensure that Orygen Global is responsive and inclusive.

Note: Lived experience of mental ill-health is welcome but not required. You will be in control of how and how much you wish to share your personal story; we will provide you tools to make this decision safely and strategically.

McGill Global Health Scholars – Graduate Program

by Public Health Update January 24, 2022
written by Public Health Update

Background

The McGill Global Health Scholars – Graduate program supports McGill graduate students (Masters and PhD) conducting global health research internationally in a lower- or middle-income country (LMIC) or in Northern Canada. The research project submitted for funding consideration must be related to the student’s thesis or graduation requirements and must be conducted under the supervision of a McGill faculty member. During the academic year, Global Health Scholars benefit from a variety of training and networking opportunities organized by Global Health Programs (GHP). This includes the McGill Summer Institutes in Global Health, GHP’s annual Global Health Night and other events and opportunities.

Key Dates

  • Launch of call for student applications: January 10, 2022
  • Application Deadline: February 11, 2022
  • Announcement of results: March 31, 2022

Program Timeline

  • GHS Graduates Introduction Meeting: May 2022 (Date TBD)
  • Pre-Departure Training:  Complete 8 weeks prior to travel
  • Travel to Research Site: 6 weeks onsite between May 1, 2022 – April 30, 2023*
  • Global Health Method Exchange Events: Between October 2022 – April 2023
  • Global Health Night: November 2022 (Date TBD)
  • Final Report and Survey: Within 6 weeks of completing travel

*For MScPH students, travel must occur between May-August 2022 and must be directly linked to the student’s practicum placement.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible to apply for the Global Health Scholars – Graduate program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Must be currently enrolled in a graduate program at McGill (Masters or PhD level).
  • Students graduating in May/June 2022 are not eligible to apply.
  • Postdoctoral fellows are not eligible to apply.
  • Students who have been part of a previous Global Health Scholars – Graduate cohort are not eligible to apply.

Eligible Projects

  • Each year the Global Health Scholars – Graduate program supports students from a wide variety of disciplines representative of the diversity found under the umbrella of global health. This includes, but is not limited to: medicine, nursing, health sciences, nutrition, rehabilitation, law, social sciences, engineering, education, agriculture, epidemiology, population and public health, and health policy.
  • Projects can entail field-based or lab-based work conducted in an international setting (LMIC country) or in Northern Canada (indigenous health). The work must relate to the student’s thesis or graduation requirements.
  • Students should have the support and approval of their McGill supervisor to conduct the proposed research and should have a local partner with an agreed-upon research activities plan before beginning. If the project is at the stage of implementation, it must have the approvals of all appropriate ethics boards.
  • Learn about previous Global Health Scholars – Graduate cohorts

Funding

  • Students completing their project remotely or on-site locally (i.e. on-campus or in the Montreal area) will receive a stipend of up to $1,500.
  • If a student’s International / Northern Canada on-site work plan is initiated, students will receive up to an additional $1,500 (totalling $3,000) to contribute towards travel costs. If a student is not able to travel, the stipend will not exceed $1,500.
  • Actual research costs (e.g. equipment, tests) are expected to be borne by the student’s supervisor or department.
  • A student or trainee is eligible for only one award from GHP for the same trip. Any additional funding requests to GHP would have to be for a trip separate from the six weeks of travel covered by the Global Health Scholars – Graduate Program.

COVID-19 and Travel

  • Due to the COVID-19 directives set by McGill University and the Quebec Government, it is probable that the 2022 cohort of Global Health Scholars – Graduate program will need to complete their work remotely or from campus. It is also plausible that students may be able to travel to their research site at some point between May 2022 and April 2023.
  • All projects must include a remote work plan as well as an on-site work plan for students.
  • Working alongside their designated supervisor, students should be prepared to transition to remote work at any point if it is not possible to be on campus, to work from a McGill affiliated location, or to travel to an international/or northern Canada research site.
  • Travel can only proceed with prior approval from a student’s program or department. Approval should be dependent upon the directives set forth by McGill University, the Government of Quebec, travel advisories posted by Global Affairs Canada, the host country, and the onsite partner organization. GHP will consider the possibility of travel for students that is initiated by April 1, 2023. If travel is not possible at this point, students will need to complete work on their projects remotely or on-site locally.

Additional Travel-Related Information

  • Students must be onsite at least six weeks to be eligible. The six weeks do not have to be consecutive.
  • Travel can occur at any point between May 1, 2022 and April 30, 2023. Travel must be initiated by April 1, 2023 at the latest.
  • For MScPH students, travel must occur between May-August 2022 and must be directly linked to the student’s practicum placement.
  • Travel dates should be determined by the student in coordination with her/his faculty supervisor.
  • Student travel to a country with a Global Affairs Canada travel advisory of Level 3 or higher (avoid all non-essential travel or avoid all travel) is not eligible for support under the Global Health Scholars-Graduate program. View the latest travel advisories.

Students selected to participate in the Global Health Scholars – Graduate program must agree to the following terms:

  • Selected participants are considered part of the Global Health Scholars – Graduate cohortfor the 2022-2023 academic year and must attend various training, workshops or events coordinated by GHP.

World NTD Day 2022: Achieving health equity to end the neglect of poverty-related diseases

by Public Health Update January 24, 2022
written by Public Health Update

Overview

The World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day is observed on 30 January each year. The first-ever World NTD Day was celebrated on 30 January 2020. This international day is an opportunity to re-energize the momentum to end the suffering from these 20 diseases that are caused by a variety of pathogens including viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungi and toxins.

The Road map for Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) 2021–2030

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are widespread in the world’s poorest regions, where water safety, sanitation and access to health care are substandard. NTDs affect over 1 billion people globally and are caused mostly by a variety of pathogens including viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungi, and toxins.

Objective

The day provides an opportunity to focus on the millions of people who have limited or no access to prevention, treatment and care services. World NTD Day aims to bring together civil society advocates, community leaders, global health experts and policymakers working across the diverse NTD landscape, and unifies partners behind a common goal: to Face NTDs and #EndTheNeglect.

Facts

  • Despite COVID-19, a total of 757 million people received NTD treatment in 2020.
  • More than 1 billion are affected by NTDs. In total, 1.7 billion need preventive treatment every year.
  • Unprecedented progress has been achieved. 43 countries have eliminated at least one NTD.

Key messages

  • Re-energize the movement to combat NTDs 2022: the year to shine a spotlight on NTDs and the suffering they cause, and to call for comprehensive, universal care for everyone affected. It is our collective responsibility to end diseases that are entirely preventable.
  • Use innovative services to ensure continued access to NTD services during COVID-19
    Countries and NTD programmes must use innovations that have emerged before and during the pandemic to address disruptions and delays to the delivery of services.
  • Encourage collaboration across sectors such as health, education, nutrition, mental health
    Countries can beat NTDs through bold investments, actions and collaboration. WHO’s new NTD roadmap focuses on the value of integrating approaches and focusing on a number of specific NTDs.
  • Engage and support community health workers and volunteers
    Community health workers and volunteers can deliver effective NTD health services, especially to marginalized groups but these workers need support and protection.
  • Engage communities
    Informed and educated communities can help in the prevention, control and elimination of NTDs.

100% Committed movement

The 100% Committed movement will be led by countries affected by NTDs, backed by bold financial and political commitments from a wide range of stakeholders, and championed by civil society, influencers and people affected by NTDs, who will call for action.

  • Kicking off on World NTD Day (30 January 2022), we are launching an energising global movement to end NTDs.
  • The movement – called 100% Committed – will be led by countries affected by these diseases. It will be backed by bold financial and political commitments from a wide range of stakeholders and championed by civil society, influencers and people affected by NTDs, who will call for action.
  • It will be energising, positive and aspirational in tone, highlighting how we are 100% Committed to achieving the WHO’s ambitious target of 100 countries eliminating an NTD by 2030 and, ultimately, ending NTDs.
  • It will showcase the 43 countries that have already eliminated at least one NTD, proving that ending NTDs is possible. We will push for greater action and commitments on this basis.

We are 100% Committed to ending NTDs. Together, we call on our governments, parliamentarians, mayors and local governmental leaders, as well as continental and regional bodies, pharmaceutical companies, donors, multilateral organisations, academic and research institutions, non-governmental organisations and young leaders around the world, to show they are 100% Committed to ending NTDs by signing the Kigali Declaration on NTDs and pledging commitments.

  • Incredible progress made so far proves that ending NTDs is possible.
  • Efforts to tackle NTDs are a global health success story, but there is still a lot more work to be done before the world is free of NTDs:
    • These diseases continue to affect 1.7 billion people around the world.
    • The COVID-19 pandemic is threatening hard-fought progress.
    • Concerted action is needed to avoid COVID-19 and future pandemics unravelling years of progress and exposing millions of people to these diseases.
  • Ending NTDs will make our health systems more resilient and our world a more equitable and safer place.
  • Ending NTDs is possible within our lifetime – now is the moment for leaders to make commitments.

Exceptions to the COVID and flu vaccine requirements may be provided to individuals for religious beliefs or medical reasons or because the individual is pregnant or attempting to become pregnant. Requests for an exception must be submitted to the JHU vaccination registry. For additional information, applicants for SOM positions should visit https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/coronavirus/covid-19-vaccine/ and all other JHU applicants should visit https://covidinfo.jhu.edu/health-safety/covid-vaccination-information/.

The following additional provisions may apply depending on which campus you will work.  Your recruiter will advise accordingly.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
