by Public Health Update July 29, 2021
written by Public Health Update

The World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is a global campaign to raise awareness and galvanise action on themes related to breastfeeding. WBW is celebrated every 1-7 August in commemoration of the 1990 Innocenti Declaration. WBW started in 1992, with annual themes including healthcare systems, women and work, the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes, community support, ecology, economy, science, education and human rights. Since 2016, WBW is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2018, a World Health Assembly resolution endorsed WBW as an important breastfeeding promotion strategy.

Chevening Scholarships: Fully-funded Scholarships for Master’s Course

by Public Health Update July 29, 2021
written by Public Health Update

Overview

Chevening Scholarships enable outstanding emerging leaders from all over the world to pursue one-year master’s degrees in the UK. Whilst there is no ‘typical’ Chevening Scholar, we are looking for the kind of people who have the passion, ideas, and influence to provide the solutions and leadership needed to create a better future.

Because these scholarships are fully-funded (flights, accommodation, and course fees are all included), you are free to focus on achieving your professional goals and maximising the experience of a lifetime. You will live and study in the UK for a year, during which time you will develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK. On completing your studies, you will leave the UK equipped with the knowledge and networks necessary to bring your own ideas to life.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship you must:

  • Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory.
  • Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your award has ended.
  • Have completed all components of an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry onto a postgraduate programme at a UK university by the time you submit your application. This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class 2:1 honours degree in the UK but may be different depending on your course and university choice.
  • Have at least two years (equivalent to 2,800 hours) of work experience.
  • Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an unconditional offer from one of these choices by 15 July 2021.

You are not eligible for a Chevening Scholarship if you:

  • Hold British or dual British citizenship (unless you are a citizen of a British Overseas Territory or hold BN(O) and are applying from Hong Kong).
  • Hold refugee status in a non-Chevening eligible country. Applicants who are citizens of a Chevening-eligible country and who hold refugee status in a Chevening-eligible country are eligible for a scholarship.
  • Are an employee, a former employee, or relative* of an employee (since July 2018) of Her Majesty’s Government (including British embassies/high commissions; the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy; Department for International Trade; the Ministry of Defence; and the Home Office), or a staff member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
  • Employees, former employees, or relatives* of an employee (since July 2018) of Chevening Partner organisations are eligible to apply, but cannot receive a Chevening Partner Award from the organisation from which they work, previously worked, or are affiliated with through relatives.
  • Have previously studied in the UK with funding from a UK Government-funded scholarship.

Once submitted, applications undergo an electronic sift against our eligibility criteria. Any applications deemed ineligible will be removed from the selection process. Please see the list of common errors here. If you make these errors in your application form, your application will be ineligible. Please note that once your application has been submitted, it is not possible to change it retrospectively.

Eligible types of work experience

The types of work experience that are eligible for Chevening can include:

  • Full-time employment
  • Part-time employment
  • Voluntary work
  • Paid or unpaid internships

Work experience can be completed before, during, or after graduating from your undergraduate studies, however, any mandatory employment that counted towards your undergraduate or postgraduate course would not be eligible.

You do not need to meet the work experience requirement in one period of employment. Applicants can submit up to fifteen different employment periods in order to meet the requirement. If you have held more than fifteen positions then please enter the periods which make up the greatest number of hours worked.

Timeline

  • 3 AUGUST 2021: APPLICATIONS OPEN AT 12:00 BST
  • 2 NOVEMBER 2021: The deadline for applications is 2 November 2021 at 12:00 GMT (midday UK time)
  • EARLY TO MID-FEBRUARY 2022: APPLICANTS SHORTLISTED FOR INTERVIEWS
  • 28 FEBRUARY TO 29 APRIL 2022: INTERVIEWS TAKE PLACE
  • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022: 2022/2023 Chevening Scholars commence their studies in the UK, and enter into an international network that they’ll be a part of for the rest of their lives!

and take the movement for equitable partnerships with young people to the next level! And we need your expertise to make it happen!

Do you have relevant experience in developing global movement-builidng communications, campaigns for systems change (especially related to equity in the international development), and knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and rights donors and stakeholders? If so, you may just be the one we’re looking for!

We are hoping to inspire progress in the following areas:

  1. Implementation of equitable agreements and partnerships between youth, youth-led organizations, and other institutions, by adjusting subcontracts, memoranda of understanding, terms of reference, and ensuring fair compensation for work;
  2. Making resources more easily available by co-designing new funding mechanisms with young people and revising procurement policies and existing mechanisms;
  3. Facilitating organizational development, not just technical strengthening to strengthen youth-led organizations, networks, and movements based on their identified goals and needs and improve non-youth organizations and institutions’ ability to establish and sustain partnerships with young people.

Why do we need comms/campaign support? As a first step, we want to design a challenge for action in these areas. By the end, we want stakeholders to be able to demonstrate concrete change (big and small) in these areas.

What is the timeline? We want to start strategizing with you/your team in early August 2021 (we aim to have our first meeting with you in the second week of August) and aim to kick off the campaign/challenge starting in September 2021, going through March/April 2022.

What experience do you need? Experience working with young people, movement building communications, campaigns creating systems change (especially related to equity in the “international development field”), globally focused, and knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and rights donors and stakeholders would be preferred.

World Drowning Prevention Day 2021

by Public Health Update July 25, 2021
written by Public Health Update

The World Drowning Prevention Day is observed annually on 25th July. The UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/75/273 “Global drowning prevention” assign 25 July as World Drowning Prevention Day.

This day serves as an opportunity to highlight the tragic and profound impact of drowning on families and communities and offer life-saving solutions to prevent it. It is estimated that 236,000 people drown every year, and drowning is among the ten leading causes of death for children and youth aged 1-24 years. Similarly, more than 90% of drowning deaths occur in rivers, lakes, wells and domestic water storage vessels in low- and middle-income countries, with children and adolescents in rural areas disproportionately affected.

All stakeholders are invited to mark World Drowning Prevention Day – governments, UN agencies, civil society organizations, the private sector, academia and individuals – by highlighting the need for urgent, coordinated and multi-sectoral action on proven measures such as:

  • installing barriers controlling access to water
  • providing safe places away from water such as crèches for pre-school children with capable childcare
  • teaching swimming, water safety and safe rescue skills
  • training bystanders in safe rescue and resuscitation
  • setting and enforcing safe boating, shipping and ferry regulations
  • improving flood risk management

Call for Application: Regional Peer Education Academy

by Public Health Update July 22, 2021
written by Public Health Update

Overview

Y-PEER Asia Pacific Center announces the application for the ‘Regional Peer Education Academy 2021’ with support of partner organisations, UNFPA APRO, UNAIDS, APA, IPPF SARO, Youth-LEAD, Me for Myself, UNESCO, ASAP and ARROW to increase the knowledge of Peer Education and SRHR of Young People of Asia Pacific Region. 25 Young People will be selected per batch under the Regional Peer Education Academy.

Background

Young people in most countries, particularly in the Asia Pacific Region, find it difficult to receive clear and accurate information about matters that concern them, such as sex, sexuality, substance abuse, sexual and reproductive health, HIV-AIDS, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This occurs for a variety of reasons, including social norms and taboos, stereotyping, economic deprivation, a lack of platforms, and information availability. Although the information is available, it may be delivered in an authoritarian, judgmental, or unsuited manner to the values, perspectives, and lifestyles of young people. Explaining their thoughts to others and participating in situations where they can learn from their peers help students learn a lot.

Due to the present Pandemic, there are far fewer options for delivering SRHR knowledge and peer education other than through the internet (online). Because of to the cancellation of face-to-face local , national or regional peer education training or workshops due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Regional Peer Education Academy’ proposes to fill the gaps by online capacity building of young people in the field of SRHR, mental health, and other related issues.

World Hepatitis Day 2021: Hepatitis Can’t Wait

by Public Health Update July 22, 2021
written by Public Health Update

The World Hepatitis Day (WHD) is observed to raise awareness of viral hepatitis. World Hepatitis Day aims to unite the global community to demand action from decision makers globally to prioritise the elimination of viral hepatitis. WHD is one of the World Health Organization’s officially mandated global public health days. It is a day when the world comes together to raise awareness of hepatitis, one of the most deadly and neglected diseases and health crises – one that is claiming a life every 30 seconds. Globally, 325 million people live with hepatitis, with more than 1.1 million lives lost each year to hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Yet, we have the tools to eliminate the disease by 2030.

On July 28, we raise our collective voices to call for more action for the people affected by hepatitis. Across the world, campaign supporters will raise their voices on social media, hold webinars, speak to the media and hold events to spread the message and raise awareness of hepatitis.

Objectives

1) To raise awareness of viral hepatitis
2) Communicate the urgent need for action on hepatitis now.
3) Reveal the social injustice caused by the lack of action on viral hepatitis
4) Raise the voices of the people and communities affected by viral hepatitis to demand positive action and fight stigma
5) Celebrate the global community combating hepatitis around the world
6) Call on policymakers, decision makers and global funders to join the fight to eliminate hepatitis.

With a person dying every 30 seconds from a hepatitis related illness – even in the current COVID-19 crisis – we can’t wait to act on viral hepatitis.

Hep Can’t Wait

‘Hepatitis Can’t Wait’ is the new campaign theme to launch WHD 2021. This will bring WHA and our global network of over 300 members in nearly 100 countries together to lead the campaign internationally.

Launching in May, 2021 the Hepatitis Can’t Wait global campaign highlights the need to accelerate hepatitis elimination efforts, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Alongside this, it will also highlight the social injustice and inequity caused by the current lack of action on hepatitis elimination and focus on the positive action needed to get on track to meet our 2030 elimination goals.

written by Public Health Update

Overview
The Alliance is seeking a team of researchers to help prepare background material in support of a research agenda for action on the social determinants of health. At the recent World Health Assembly, the WHO was requested to prepare a World Report on the Social Determinants of Health to update work from the previous nearly fifteen years ago. The team of researchers will review the status of research on social determinants of health, identifying key gaps, and will produce a discussion paper to inform an expert consultation later this year. Based on the consultation, the team will develop a final synthesis report and a draft research agenda.

Objectives:

  1. To inform the development of a draft research agenda for social determinants of health, with a focus on policy and implementation research.
  2. To review the current status of research on social determinants of health, identifying key gaps.
  3. To inform a section of the upcoming World Report.

Deliverables:

  1. A desk review of key documents from WHO and other partners on research on social determinants of health, including related fields such as multisectoral governance, health in all policies and health inequality monitoring.
  2. A literature review of research in the last ten years on social determinants of health, with a focus on political economy, policy and implementation.
  3. A discussion paper with a first draft of the findings to inform an expert meeting to be held in October/ November 2021.
  4. Support to the expert meeting, including writing a meeting report.
  5. A final report synthesizing the findings of both reviews and the discussions of the expert meeting, identification of key gaps, and first draft of WHO research agenda for social determinants of health, with a focus on policy and implementation.

Work duration and cost
One team of two to three researchers working under a senior researcher will be funded up to a total budget of US$ 50 000. No further funding will be provided within or beyond the project period. The activities should be undertaken between September and December 2021 (four months).

Application process
Deadline: Monday, 9 August 2021, 23:59 CEST
Bids submitted after this deadline will not be considered.
To apply, please submit an expression of interest of no more than 1 000 words, or four pages, explaining the researchers’ interest and experience on this topic, a budget and CVs by Monday, 9 August. Please also provide a summary budget of the total costs broken down by the following categories (not all may be applicable): personnel, supplies facilities, equipment, communications, travel and per diem, and other. These documents should be submitted as one PDF file.

Expressions of interest submitted after this deadline will not be considered.
Successful applicants can expect to be notified within three weeks of the deadline. WHO may, at its own discretion, extend this closing date for the submission of expressions of interest by notifying all applicants thereof in
writing.

Submissions of Expressions of Interest should be made via email at alliancehpsr@who.int. Please use the subject line: WHO Bid Ref. Expressions of Interest: SDH Research Agenda.
