UniteHealth Social Media Awards 2023

by Public Health Update March 3, 2023
written by Public Health Update

The UniteHealth Social Media Awards were first established in 2014 to recognize the vital roles played by social media users in relation to key global health and sustainable development issues, and have three focused goals in 2023. The Awards are convened by UniteHealth, a community-focused organization dedicated to advancing global health through the strategic use of social media. Its mission is to recognize and celebrate excellence in the use of these tools, and to facilitate ongoing dialogue and discussion surrounding key themes and challenges in the field of global health.

Objective

  • Identify and honour the COVID-19 influencers who emerged during the pandemic, and introduce them to wider audiences and across multiple platforms;
  • Support the pandemic recovery phase by bolstering the valued social media connections that the pandemic has catalysed; and
  • Strengthen preparedness against future pandemics and disease outbreaks by sharing lessons learned around social media ‘network readiness’

The 2023 Awards

All nominee and voting information will be preserved as part of the COVID-19 Influencers Awards website for future reference, including key national COVID-19 influencers identified in each participating country.

This dual focus on nomination/voting steps and on Awards categories/country locations has been intentionally designed to drive maximum reach and engagement for the Awards, and also to drive exposure of nominees to growing audiences, boosting their following at all levels, and across multiple social media platforms. Naturally, the spotlight this generates will ultimately focus on individual award winners but the process will also have a deliberate ‘halo effect’ for all nominees and in all participating countries.

Participation is free and open to all. Nomination and endorsement/voting processes will require verified individual participation, with options for public anonymity. Agreed, transparent privacy and data protection/terms of use policies are being rigidly applied throughout.

Given the dynamic, varied – and at times controversial – nature of social media use during the pandemic, the COVID-19 Influencers Social Media Awards/categories are intentionally not associated with any specific social media platform, provider and/or tool.

Decisions of the 2023 Awards judging panel shall be based on transparent criteria and are final. Panel members and/or those linked with the awards secretariat and host/sponsoring organizations may be nominated but are not eligible for individual awards, and may not nominate or vote for award nominees.

World Birth Defects Day 2023: Many birth defects, one voice

by Public Health Update March 2, 2023
written by Public Health Update

By Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia

To mark this year’s World Birth Defects Day, WHO is highlighting the urgent need for countries in the South-East Asia Region and globally to strengthen health systems to prevent, detect, manage and care for birth defects, which are structural or functional anomalies that occur during intrauterine life.

Globally, an estimated 8 million newborns are born with a birth defect every year. Nine out of every ten children born with a serious birth defect are in low- and middle-income countries. The most common severe birth defects are heart defects, neural tube defects and Down syndrome, but there are many others, which can be caused by one or more genetic, infectious, nutritional or environmental factors.

In the WHO South-East Asia Region, birth defects are the third most common cause of child mortality, and the fourth most common cause of neonatal mortality, accounting for 12% of all neonatal deaths. Between 2010 and 2019, birth defects increased as a proportion of child mortality in the Region, from 6.2% to 9.2%, and in four countries, birth defects now contribute to more than 20% of under-five mortality. In 2019, birth defects contributed to at least 117 000 deaths in the Region, equal to around 22% of the global total.

Since 2014, WHO has supported all countries of the Region to drive rapid, sustained reductions in maternal, newborn and child mortality, which has included targeted action to prevent, detect, manage and care for birth defects. All Member States have initiated hospital-based birth defect surveillance and are implementing national action plans to prevent and manage birth defects.

Six Member States – Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Myanmar and Nepal – continue to support a WHO-developed online database to better track birth defects. To date, the database has recorded more than 4.7 million births in the Region, including about 51 000 infants born with birth defects. All countries have initiated routine rubella vaccination for girls, achieving an average coverage rate of 83%. Maldives and Sri Lanka have eliminated rubella, and Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Timor-Leste have controlled congenital rubella syndrome.

All Member States continue to implement folic acid supplementation, and several have fortified foods such as wheat flour with folic acid, vitamin B-12 and iron. Across the Region, pregnant women continue to be counselled to avoid potentially harmful medications, X-rays, tobacco products, alcohol and drugs. In most countries, basic services for birth defect care and management are available, however access to advanced treatments, rehabilitation and support for affected babies and families remains inadequate, as is access to genetic and metabolic screening.

To urgently strengthen health systems to prevent, detect, treat, care for and manage birth defects, the Region has several priorities. First, improving the coverage and quality of preventive interventions such as rubella immunization, quality antenatal care and folic acid- and B12-fortified foods. Increased leadership is especially needed from ministries of health to fully implement and monitor food fortification programmes, which should be aligned with WHO standards.

Second, enhancing health system capacities to detect, treat and care for birth defects, with a focus on adapting new WHO guidance on universal screening of newborns for hearing impairment and eye abnormalities. For this, countries should integrate a series of simple bedside tests into existing postnatal health care services, which must be supported by effective systems for referral, diagnosis, management and follow up.

Third, sustaining and expanding surveillance and improving data systems, with a focus on strengthening not just coverage and quality, but analysis and application. Data that are of adequate quality, and which are regularly analyzed, must actively inform advocacy for resource mobilization, and also support ongoing capacity building and programme monitoring.

Fourth, increasing support for parents and caregivers for early childhood development and to improve disability care. For this, health facilities should better connect with community-based networks, platforms and organizations, which should in turn empower affected families to access services and support, including social protection.

Every child has the right to survive and thrive, with full access to quality and comprehensive health and social services. On World Birth Defects Day, WHO reaffirms its commitment to support all countries of the Region to urgently strengthen health systems to prevent, detect, manage and care for birth defects, for every child, everywhere.

The Montreux Charter on Patient Safety galvanizes action to address avoidable harm in health care

by Public Health Update March 1, 2023
written by Public Health Update

The Fifth Global Ministerial Summit on Patient Safety was held in Montreux, Switzerland on 23 and 24 February with the slogan “Less Harm, Better Care – from Resolution to Implementation”

The Fifth Global Ministerial Summit on Patient Safety closed in Montreux, Switzerland on 24 February, after endorsing the Montreux Charter on Patient Safety with recommended actions to address avoidable harm in health care.  This was the first Global Ministerial Patient Safety Summit to take place after the COVID-19 pandemic, which has exposed the high risk of unsafe care to patients, health workers and the general public, and made visible a range of safety gaps across all core components of health systems.  The Summit was hosted by the Swiss government.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, participated in the Summit with the host, the Swiss President Alain Berset.  In his address to the ministerial segment, Dr Tedros urged health ministers to invest in patient safety as part of their commitment to universal health coverage and health security; to build a culture of safety and strengthen reporting and learning systems; to support health workforce and strengthen their capacity; to strengthen data systems; and to engage patients and families in their own care.  Dr Tedros announced that the theme for World Patient Safety Day 2023 will be “Engaging patients for patient safety”.

In Montreux, delegations from more than 80 countries discussed the gaps and key challenges for the implementation of the World Health Assembly resolution (WHA72.6) “Global Action on Patient Safety” and the global roadmap for patient safety, the Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021–2030: Towards eliminating avoidable harm in health care.

Despite progress to address patient safety challenges worldwide, concerted efforts are needed to ensure safety of patients and health and care workers, noted the delegations and stressed that lessons learned from the COVID-19 crisis hold huge potential to build safer and more resilient health systems.

The Montreux Charter on Patient Safety, endorsed at the Summit, reaffirms that patient harm in health care is an urgent public health issue, pertinent to countries of all income settings and geographies and therefore a shared global challenge.  It identifies actions for countries to narrow implementation gaps in patient safety, including by treating patient safety as a global public health priority, building upon lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, deepening partnerships, collaboration and mutual learning, and engaging patients and their families.  The Charter also urged setting priorities for patient safety, including medication safety, safe surgery, infection prevention and control, and antimicrobial resistance.

Unsafe care is among the leading causes of death and disability in the world.  It is particularly acute in resource-constrained settings.  In the years preceding the COVID-19 pandemic, 2.6 million people died every year due to safety lapses in hospitals in lower-income countries.  Rich countries are not immune: nearly 15 per cent of hospital expenditure and activity in countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development could be attributed to treating safety failures.

It is estimated that more than half of cases of patient harm are preventable, by working together to create a safer healthcare system for all and to build a culture of safety that emphasizes continuous improvement, learning, and innovation.

The Summit in Montreux builds on the preceding Global Ministerial Summits on Patient Safety which have raised awareness about burden of avoidable patient harm in health care and fostered strategic approaches to strengthening Patient Safety, from London (2016), to Bonn (2017), to Tokyo (2018) and to Jeddah (2019).

The Sixth Summit will be held in Chile in 2024.

written by Public Health Update

Overview

The Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity (AFHE) program is dedicated to training those leaders – individuals who will have health equity as their mindset and health disparities reduction as their explicit skillset. With this philosophy and support from the Atlantic Philanthropies, the Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity team at the Fitzhugh Mullan Institute for Health Workforce Equity designed, and in January 2017, launched the Leaders for Health Equity fellowship program, now called the Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity at the George Washington University.

Program

This is a one-year fellowship. There are in-person meetings, called convenings, throughout the year that represent a total anticipated time commitment of five weeks. Convenings are full-time, out of office commitments that take place in different parts of the world. In between convenings, there is an online curriculum taught by the AFHE program faculty. These online trainings take place every two weeks for 90 minutes. There is an additional time commitment for self-directed learning of 12-16 hours per month. Self-directed learning activities include completion of program readings, videos and assignments. Assignments may be related to your individual project, reflection and/or program evaluation. The University of Manchester Public Health International Summer School

by Public Health Update February 28, 2023
written by Public Health Update

Overview

The programme for the Public Health International Summer School is designed to allow you to get the most out of your four week stay in Manchester.

The purpose of this summer school is to provide you with an in-depth introduction to epidemiology and public health. You will be taught by world-leading researchers, as well as our highly successful teaching staff who teach on many of our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

We offer a full range of social activities to introduce you to Manchester and the north-west of England.

It is structured to provide you with an opportunity to learn about a wide range of topics from our teaching staff. A typical week will include lectures, practical sessions, independent research and group work.

You will demonstrate your learning through working in groups on the following topics and produce a joint project together that will test the application of your learning in the real world. You will also present your project to the group and the academic staff.

What you will learn?

Evidence synthesis

You will learn how to understand scientific evidence, identify the best evidence and implement it. You will also get an understanding of critical appraisal.

You will examine a range of study designs, sources of bias and examine the hierarchy of evidence.

You will be guided on how best to search for evidence that can be used for evidence-based practice, and will develop techniques with referencing software.

The sessions are a mix of computer workshops and classroom-based talks, with some more practical skills being developed as you work in groups.

Biostatistics

Following your introduction to evidence, you will learn about conducting analysis of data.

You will be introduced to core statistical concepts and techniques that are essential for understanding, interpreting and undertaking biomedical research.

Sessions will demonstrate how powerful techniques can be used to investigate relationships between outcomes, patient characteristics and treatments, as well as making predictions about the prognosis of patients.

During these sessions you will have the chance to use the computer labs and will be guided through using biostatistics software which may be new to you.

You will also have the opportunity to run your own trial and discuss the methodological issues.

Health economics

You will have the opportunity to look at key concepts of economic evaluation and the evidence base behind health economic practice.

You will examine the role that a rationalised health care system plays and how decisions based on the cost and clinical efficacy of treatment improve population health.

We will also set the scene for the practical application of equity on population health.

A wide variety of learning methods will be used to understand these key concepts and demonstrate their application in real-world settings.

Health inequalities

Using social determinants of health, you will explore inequalities and how they impact on health outcomes across the life-course.

You will examine the principles and practice of good health promotion policies, and explore the importance of the Health in All Policies movement advocated by the World Health Organization.

We will look at interventions to help reduce inequalities and examine the evidence base for delivering these in different socio-economic settings.

Intercultural public health

You will examine culture, its impact on health and the potential impact of ‘culturally competent’ communities.

Through group work, discussions and interactive activities, you will look at cultural models, frameworks and policies in relation to your personal and professional practice with the aim of improving health and wellbeing outcomes.

Situational learning

Our programme will also include innovative practical sessions teaching you why and how to communicate about science and health with broader audiences. These sessions will be led by experienced faculty from the MSc Science and Health Communication programme.

Eligibility and how to apply

To apply for one of our international summer schools, we expect the following.

  • You will be 18 or over on the first day of the course.
  • You will be a registered undergraduate student at a tertiary institution such as a university or college. Mature students, postgraduates and recent graduates are also welcome to apply.
