World Toilet Day- “Sustainable sanitation and climate change”

by Public Health Update November 19, 2020
written by Public Health Update

World Toilet Day observed on 19 November to raise awareness & take action on global sanitation crisis and help to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6). World Toilet Day focused to raise awareness of the 4.2 billion people living without access to safely managed sanitation.

This week:

  • World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2020! United to preserve antimicrobials
  • Primary Health Care (PHC) Research Week
  • World COPD Day: “Living Well with COPD – Everybody, Everywhere”

It is about taking action to tackle the global sanitation crisis and achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Theme 2020

This year the theme remarks the importance of “Sustainable sanitation and climate change”.

Climate change is accelerating. Flood, drought, and rising sea levels are threatening sanitation systems – from toilets to septic tanks to treatment plants. Floodwater can contaminate wells used for drinking water or flooding might damage toilets and spread human waste into communities and food crops, causing deadly and chronic diseases.

Everyone must have sustainable sanitation, alongside clean water and handwashing facilities, to help protect and maintain our health security and stop the spread of deadly infectious diseases such as COVID-19, cholera, and typhoid.

Toilets can help us to fight climate change too! Wastewater and sludge from toilets contain valuable water, nutrients, and energy. Sustainable sanitation systems make productive use of waste to safely boost agriculture and reduce and capture emissions for greener energy.

Facts

  • Over half of the global population or 4.2 billion people lack safe sanitation.
  • 40% – or three billion people – of the global population live without basic hand washing facilities with soap and water available at home.
  • Around 297,000 children under five – more than 800 every day – die annually from diarrhoeal diseases due to poor hygiene, poor sanitation or unsafe drinking water.
  • Globally, 80% of the wastewater generated by society flows back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused.
  • By 2050, up to 5.7 billion people could be living in areas where water is scarce for at least one month a year, creating unprecedented competition for water.

World COPD Day: “Living Well with COPD – Everybody, Everywhere”

by Public Health Update November 17, 2020
written by Public Health Update

World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Day has been organized by Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) in collaboration with the World Health Organization each year in November. It was initiated in 2002. The goal of World COPD Day is to raise awareness and present new knowledge and novel therapeutic strategies for COPD worldwide.

The 19th annual World COPD Day will take place on November 18, 2020.

Theme

The 2020 theme for World COPD Day is “Living Well with COPD – Everybody, Everywhere”. This year’s aim is to send a positive message to both patients and providers that although COPD does not have a cure, there are many ways to actively live well.

Facts

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a preventable and treatable disease that causes breathlessness, chronic sputum production and cough.
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive life-threatening lung disease that causes breathlessness (initially with exertion) and predisposes to exacerbations and serious illness.
  • COPD is currently the 3rd leading cause of death globally and is highly prevalent in low resource countries.
  • The primary cause of COPD is exposure to tobacco smoke (either active smoking or secondhand smoke). Other risk factors include exposure to indoor and outdoor air pollution and occupational dusts and fumes.

Together for babies born too soon – Caring for the future

by Public Health Update November 17, 2020
written by Public Health Update

World Prematurity Day is a global movement to raise awareness of premature birth. World Prematurity Day is observed each year on 17 November. It is an opportunity to call attention to the heavy burden that preterm birth causes on parents, families, friends and on former preterm born children. World Prematurity Day is a key moment to focus global attention on the burden of preterm birth, leading to long term morbidity and infant mortality.

Preterm is defined as babies born alive before 37 weeks of pregnancy are completed. There are sub-categories of preterm birth, based on gestational age:

  • extremely preterm (less than 28 weeks)
  • very preterm (28 to 32 weeks)
  • moderate to late preterm (32 to 37 weeks).

Induction or caesarean birth should not be planned before 39 completed weeks unless medically indicated.

2020 Theme

World Prematurity Day 2020: Together for babies born too soon – Caring for the future.

Facts

  • Every year, 15 million babies are born preterm (i.e. before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy) – more than one baby out of ten, worldwide.
  • Preterm birth complications are the leading cause of death among children under 5 years of age, responsible for approximately 1 million deaths in 2015 (Source of info).
  • Three-quarters of these deaths could be prevented with current, cost-effective interventions.
  • Across 184 countries, the rate of preterm birth ranges from 5% to 18% of babies born.

Messages

  • Active involvement with long, direct periods of care and the physical and emotional closeness of baby and parents during birth, delivery and hospitalisation can have great benefits on the short- and long-term health of the baby.
  • Engage parents from the beginning with good communication, education, participation in care giving, and decision-making.
  • Skin-to-skin contact as early and as continuously as possible has positive and protective effects on the preterm baby’s health.
  • Each level of newborn care needs to have the necessary staff per shift, equipment, commodities, supplies and diagnostics to ensure safe care for babies born too soon.

WHO establishes Council on the Economics of Health for All

by Public Health Update November 14, 2020
written by Public Health Update

The World Health Organization has announced a new Council on the Economics of Health for All, staffed by leading economists and health experts, to put “Health for All” at the centre of how we think about value creation and economic growth.

The Council, comprising top economists and health experts, will focus on investments in health, and achieving sustainable, inclusive and innovation-led economic growth.

-WHO

“The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the consequences of chronic under-investment in public health. But we don’t just need more investment; we must also rethink how we value health,” said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, as he made the announcement on the final day of the resumed 73rd World Health Assembly on Friday.

Chaired by noted economist Professor Mazzucato, Professor of the Economics of Innovation and Public Value and Founding Director in the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose at University College London, the Council will aim to create a body of work that sees investment in local and global health systems as an investment in the future, not as a short-term cost. Designing such investments makes our economies more healthy, inclusive and sustainable.

The COVID-19 pandemic, with 52 million reported cases and 1.3 million deaths, has shown the dire consequences of chronic under-investment in health on the global economy and on the lives and livelihoods of billions worldwide.

Over the past year, the pandemic has ignited a socio-economic crisis like no other; a crisis that has undermined global stability and solidarity. It has stressed how interdependent health and the economy are and served as a reminder that health is a human right.

“We are living through multiple crises: economic, climate and health related. If we continue to patch up the system each time, we will always be one step behind. I am thrilled to work closely with Dr Tedros on a proactive Health for All economic agenda, to shape our economies so they truly have wellbeing and inclusion at the centre of how we create value, measure it and distribute it,” Mazzucato said.

Returning to the status quo following the pandemic will not be enough – we need an innovation-led transformation of our health systems to achieve economic well-being everywhere.

“The time has come for a new narrative that sees health not as a cost, but an investment that is the foundation of productive, resilient and stable economies,” Dr Tedros said.

The Council on the Economics of Health For All is expected to hold its first virtual session in the coming weeks, to discuss its work plan and mode of operation. The Council will produce thought leadership for implementing change, and help to inform the piloting of initiatives at country level.
