Overview

In Indonesia, the number of HIV-positive adolescents aged 15-24 years until June 2020 reached 64,652 people of which 31% were already taking ARVs (Ministry of Health, 2020). Between 2011 and 2015, new HIV infections in Indonesia increased annually by 13.1 percent among adolescents (ages 15 to 19) and by 11.8 percent among young people (ages 20 to 24). The Integrated Biological and Behavioral Survey (IBBS) found that HIV prevalence among adolescent boys who have sex with men (MSM) has almost quadrupled between 2011 and 2015 (from 3.8 to 15.6 percent). ). In the 2015 IBBS, the prevalence of HIV among adolescent female direct sex workers and adolescent female indirect sex workers was 6.6 and 1.5 percent, respectively. Likewise, the highest cumulative AIDS percentage has consistently occurred in the 20-29 year age group since 2005, which means they are infected with HIV in their teens (Ministry of Health’s PIMS & HIV Quarterly Report, 2020).
