The Master of Public Health Advanced is a flexible degree designed to give students a broad introduction to public health while equipping them with the skills and knowledge to define, critically assess and resolve public health issues within a community.
Students who decide not to complete the Master of Public Health Advanced have the option to exit early with a Master of Public Health or an appropriate Graduate Certificate

This postgraduate degree is perfect for medical professionals, allied health workers and clinicians who are looking for ‘bigger picture’ approaches that improve the health of individuals, populations, the environment and communities. The Master of Public Health focuses on improving existing health-promoting environments, identifying public health priorities, generating initiatives for policy and action, and developing strategies and interventions to ensure equity in the health system.
The degree’s flexible structure (half core, half elective) allows you to tailor your degree across a number of career pathways to suit your interests and career aspirations. Career pathways are offered in six areas: applied research, environments for health, health economics and management, health promotion and community development, public health nutrition, public health practice.

Entry requirements

Deakin University offers admission to postgraduate courses through a number of Admission categories. In all categories of admission, selection is based primarily on academic merit as indicated by an applicant’s previous academic record.

Entry will be based on performance in:
  • a Bachelor degree or other qualification at a higher AQF level in anydiscipline OR
  • other evidence of academic capability judged to be equivalent

English language requirements

Overall IELTS score of 6.5 with no band less than 6 (or equivalent).

This program helps you to develop and further your career in public health practice, research and/or management. It allows you to re-orientate your work interests in health to disease prevention and health promotion and is widely recognised both nationally and internationally as the public health credential for careers in public health.
These programs focus on the socio-ecological model of public health that emphasises and analyses the important interactions between the social, biological, economic and environmental determinants of health. They enable you to apply this analytical skill set to plan, implement and evaluate population based interventions that protect and promote health.
The program has a strong focus on international health and provides you with the opportunity to focus your public health studies by selecting a range of electives in areas such as public health nutrition, health promotion, climate change, international health, environmental health, and health services management.

English language requirements apply to International applicants and other applicants whose previous study was undertaken in a language other than English. The minimum English language requirements for such applicants for entry to this program are as follows:

  • A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on IELTS (Academic) with no sub-score of less than 6.0
  • OR a minimum score of 575 on TOEFL
  • OR an internet-based (iBT) TOEFL score of 79 (no sub-score less than 19)
  • OR no score less than 3+ in each skill of the ISLPR (conducted by ISLPR Language Services only)
  • OR a minimum grade of C on the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)
  • OR a minimum grade of C on the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)
  • OR an overall score of 58 in the Pearson Test of English (Academic) with no score less than 50.

English test results must be no more than two years old.

If you’re a health professional and you’re ready to take the next step in your career, James Cook University’s (JCU) 1.5 year full-time (or part-time equivalent) Master of Public Health (MPH) is designed for you. While completing core subjects, you’ll have a lot of flexibility in selecting elective subjects so you can tailor your course to fit your career aspirations. This course will enable you to develop your skills and knowledge to detect, prevent and control communicable and non-communicable diseases ensuring safe and healthy environments for tropical, rural, remote and Indigenous communities.

Completion of a recognised, appropriate undergraduate degree, or equivalent prior learning including appropriate professional experience. Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 3a – Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.
