Population is more than numbers; it is about people, choices, rights, and opportunities.
This year’s World Population Day reminds us that young people are at the heart of sustainable development. Across the world, they are leading innovation, driving social change, and contributing to healthier and more resilient communities. Yet, many continue to face barriers that prevent them from realizing their aspirations.
The latest UNFPA Lives, Choices and Futures survey, involving more than 108,000 young adults across 73 countries, highlights a clear message: young people aspire to build families and secure futures, but their decisions are increasingly shaped by financial insecurity, housing challenges, employment opportunities, and access to quality health and education.
At the same time, demographic transitions are reshaping our world. Two-thirds of the global population now live in countries where fertility rates are below replacement level, while urbanization, migration, and population ageing continue to transform societies. These shifts demand evidence-informed policies that prioritize people rather than population targets.
As public health professionals and policymakers, our response should focus on:
➜ Investing in quality education and lifelong learning.
➜ Ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights.
➜ Creating decent jobs and economic opportunities for young people.
➜ Strengthening inclusive health systems and social protection.
➜ Meaningfully engaging young people in policy and decision-making.
➜ Using demographic evidence to build equitable and sustainable societies.
The real population challenge is not simply whether fertility rates rise or fall. It is whether every individual has the freedom, resources, and opportunity to make informed choices about their lives and futures.
On this World Population Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to protecting human rights, advancing health equity, and empowering young people to achieve their full potential—for healthier communities today and a more sustainable tomorrow.
