The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

by Public Health Update November 18, 2018
written by Public Health Update

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims was started by RoadPeace in 1993. Since then it has been observed and promoted worldwide by several NGOs, including the European Federation of Road Traffic Victims (FEVR) and its associated organizations. On 26 October 2005, the United Nations endorsed it as a global day to be observed every third Sunday in November each year, making it a major advocacy day for road traffic injury prevention. WHO and the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration encourage governments and NGOs around the world to commemorate this day.
“This theme is based on Pillar 2 of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety – Safer roads and mobility.

WDoR 2018 slogan: ”Roads have Stories”

  • 3,400people die on the road every day
  • More than 90% of road traffic deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.
  • People aged between 15 and 44 years account for 48% of global road traffic deaths
  • More than 1.25 million people die each year as a result of road traffic crashes.
  • Road traffic crashes cost most countries 3% of their gross domestic product.
  • Without sustained action, road traffic crashes are predicted to become the seventh leading cause of death by 2030.
  • 50%reduction of road traffic deaths & injuries by 2020 called for in SDG 3.6.

World Prematurity Day 2018 #WorldPrematurityDay

by Public Health Update November 17, 2018
written by Public Health Update

World Prematurity Day 2018 #WorldPrematurityDay: World Prematurity Day celebrated internationally on November 17th to increase awareness of preterm births as well as the deaths and disabilities due to prematurity. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) an estimated 15 million babies are born preterm (before 37 completed weeks of gestation), and this number is rising.
Premature birth is a very serious health problem. It is the leading cause of death in children under the age of five worldwide. Babies born too early may have more health issues than babies born on time, and may face long-term health problems that affect the brain, the lungs, hearing or vision. World Prematurity Day on November 17 raises awareness of this serious health crisis. WHO produces guidelines, tools and evidence-based recommendations to help prevent and care for preterm babies.

Preterm is defined as babies born alive before 37 weeks of pregnancy are completed. There are sub-categories of preterm birth, based on gestational age:
  • extremely preterm (less than 28 weeks)
  • very preterm (28 to 32 weeks)
  • moderate to late preterm (32 to 37 weeks).

Induction or caesarean birth should not be planned before 39 completed weeks unless medically indicated.

New App for WHO’s Medical eligibility criteria for contraceptive use

by Public Health Update November 15, 2018
written by Public Health Update

New App for WHO’s Medical eligibility criteria for contraceptive use: 12 November 2018 : WHO has launched an App for its Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use. This digital tool will facilitate the task of family planning providers in recommending safe, effective and acceptable contraception methods for women with medical conditions or medically-relevant characteristics.
Recommendations on the initiation and continuing use of nine common types of contraceptive methods are covered by the tool. In addition to looking at individual medical conditions or characteristics, users may also easily combine multiple conditions or characteristics and view the guidance on each condition separately or in combination.
The tool also provides a comprehensive list of medical conditions or characteristics for which all methods of contraception may be safely recommended to women provided there are no additional health concerns. Emergency contraception is also included as part of the “Additional information” section. A graphic representation of the effectiveness of different contraceptive methods is also provided.

World Diabetes Day 2018! Diabetes Concern Every Family!

by Public Health Update November 13, 2018
written by Public Health Update

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) started World Diabetes Day in 1991 in response to the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. It has since grown to become a globally celebrated on14 November and an official United Nations (UN) awareness day. It is now the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign.

World Diabetes Day aims to:

  •  Be the leading platform to promote diabetes advocacy efforts
  • Promote the importance of taking coordinated and concerted actions to confront diabetes as a serious global health threat
  • Draw attention to the key issues and keep diabetes firmly in the global public and political spotlight.

DIABETES CONCERNS EVERY FAMILY

The theme for World Diabetes Day 2018 and 2019 is ‘the family and diabetes’.

With the tagline ‘diabetes concerns every family’, the campaign has a two year timeframe. This has been a response to feedback from campaign stakeholders who have requested more time for planning, development, promotion and participation.

The primary aim of the 2018–19 campaign is to raise awareness of the impact that diabetes has on the family and to promote the role of the family in the management, care, prevention and education of the condition.

To achieve this, various media outreach and awareness activities will take place in the build up to diabetes awareness month, on World Diabetes Day itself and throughout the month of November.

DISCOVER

DETECTING DIABETES EARLY INVOLVES THE FAMILY TOO:

  • One in every two people with diabetes is undiagnosed. Early diagnosis and treatment is key to helping prevent or delay life-threatening complications.
  • If type 1 diabetes is not detected early, it can lead to serious disability or death. Know the signs and symptoms to protect yourself and your family.

PREVENT

PREVENTING TYPE 2 DIABETES INVOLVES THE FAMILY TOO:

  • Many cases of type 2 diabetes can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle. Reducing your family’s risk starts at home.
  • When a family eats healthy meals and exercises together, all family members benefit and encourage behaviours that could help prevent type 2 diabetes in the family
  • If you have diabetes in your family, learn about the risks, the warning signs to look out for and what you can do to prevent diabetes and its complications
  • Families need to live in an environment that supports healthy lifestyles and helps them to prevent type 2 diabetes

80% OF CASES OF TYPE 2 DIABETES IS PREVENTABLE THROUGH THE ADOPTION OF A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

70% OF PREMATURE DEATHS AMONG ADULTS ARE LARGELY DUE TO BEHAVIOUR INITIATED DURING ADOLESCENCE

MANAGE

CARING FOR MY DIABETES INVOLVES MY FAMILY TOO:

  • Managing diabetes requires daily treatment, regular monitoring, a healthy lifestyle and ongoing education. Family support is key.
  • All health professionals should have the knowledge and skills to help individuals and families manage diabetes
  • Education and ongoing support should be accessible to all individuals and families to help manage diabetes
  • Essential diabetes medicines and care must be accessible and affordable for every family

LESS THAN 1 IN 2 PEOPLE WITH DIABETES AND 1 IN 4 FAMILY MEMBERS OF PEOPLE WITH DIABETES HAVE ACCESS TO DIABETES EDUCATION PROGRAMMES
1 IN 5 HEALTH PROFESSIONALS DO NOT RECEIVE ANY POSTGRADUATE TRAINING IN DIABETES

FACTS:

  • 425 million adults (1-in-11) have diabetes
  • The number of people with diabetes is expected to rise to 522 million by 2030
  • 1-in-2 people with diabetes remain undiagnosed (212 million)
  • 3 out of 4 people with diabetes live in low and middle income countries
  • Over 1 million children and adolescents have type 1 diabetes
  • 1-in-6 births is affected by high blood glucose (hyperglycaemia) in pregnancy
  • Two-thirds of people with diabetes are of working age (327 million)
  • Diabetes caused 4 million deaths in 2017
  • Diabetes caused at least $727 billion in health expenditure in 2017 – that’s greater than the defence budgets of the US and China combined.

World Antibiotic Awareness Week 12-18 November, 2018: Change Can’t Wait. Our Time with Antibiotics is Running Out!
World Antibiotic Awareness Week (WAAW) takes place every November and aims to increase global awareness of antibiotic resistance and to encourage best practices among the general public, health workers, prescribers and policy makers to avoid the further emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance.
The 2018 WAAW campaign seeks to provide greater flexibility to regions and countries to reflect their unique priorities, audiences, levels of awareness, and enabling environment for behaviour change towards handling antibiotics with care. The messaging theme for WAAW 2018 will be anchored in the Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (GAP), which offers a One Health and cross-sectoral approach to address the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through its five strategic objectives.
The five days of World Antibiotic Awareness Week features tailored multiday messaging that corresponds to each of the five strategic objectives of the GAP – awareness, global AMR surveillance, infection prevention and control, optimal antimicrobial use and investment and R&D. Countries and regions can participate in the WAAW campaign throughout the week, and especially on days when the messages and objectives correspond with specific country priorities.

World Pneumonia Day: Promoting health through the life-course

by Public Health Update November 12, 2018
written by Public Health Update

World Pneumonia Day: Promoting health through the life-course:
World Pneumonia Day 12 November 2018
Established in 2009, World Pneumonia Day is marked every year on November 12th to:

  • Raise awareness about pneumonia, the world’s leading infectious killer of children under the age of 5
  • Promote interventions to protect against, prevent, and treat pneumonia and highlight proven approaches and solutions in need of additional resources and attention
  • Generate action, including continued donor investment, to combat pneumonia and other common, yet sometimes deadly, childhood diseases

Pneumonia is one of the leading causes of deaths in children under five years old despite being easily preventable and treatable. Although vaccines and other preventative efforts are decreasing the burden of the disease, much more work is still required. Those living in poor communities are at highest risk of pneumonia. Every child, regardless of where they are born, deserves access to lifesaving vaccines and medicines.
Key facts

  • Pneumonia accounts for 16% of all deaths of children under 5 years old, killing 920 136 children in 2015.
  • Pneumonia can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi.
  • Pneumonia can be prevented by immunization, adequate nutrition, and by addressing environmental factors.
  • Pneumonia caused by bacteria can be treated with antibiotics, but only one third of children with pneumonia receive the antibiotics they need.

Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 Main findings (Published in The Lancet in November 2018). GBD 2017 provides for the first time an independent estimation of population, for each of 195 countries and territories and the globe, using a standardized, replicable approach, as well as a comprehensive update on fertility. GBD 2017 incorporates major data additions and improvements, using a total of 68,781 data sources in the estimation process.

Global Burden of Disease: A systematic, scientific effort to quantify the comparative magnitude of health loss due to diseases, injuries, and risk factors by age, sex, and geographies for specific points in time.

  1. In 2017, the top three countries in life expectancy were Singapore (84.8 years), Japan (84.2 years), and Switzerland (84.0 years); lowest were Central African Republic (51.9 years), Lesotho (54.7 years), and Mozambique (58.4 years). However, the question is whether additional years are spent in good health or poor health – global trends in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) indicate that more effort is needed to increase healthy life expectancy.
  2. Fertility: In 2017, 91 countries have total fertility rates below the replacement rate of 2.05, while the opposite is true in 104 countries where higher total fertility rates which may drive population increases.
  3. While females tend to live longer than males, many of these additional years are spent in poor health.
  4. An unintended consequence of greater access to health care globally is increases in mortality from diseases and disorders linked to antibiotic resistance.
  5. Among age groups, the under-5 age group experienced huge reductions in mortality between 1950 and 2017, while adults have made much less progress, particularly adult males.
  6. HIV remains a massive public health threat, particularly because global financing has plateaued, domestic health spending has stayed low among high-burden countries, and its incidence has not declined as quickly in younger as in older populations.
  7. Risk factors: high blood pressure and smoking are leading global risk factors linked to early death and disability at all ages.
  8. 8. SDGs: Despite progress, achievement of SDGs by 2030 is in doubt. To meet SDGs, there is a need to increase progress on health-related indicators between 2017 and 2030.
