World Breastfeeding Week 2020 Message

The theme of World Breastfeeding Week 2020 is “Support breastfeeding for a healthier planet”. In line with this theme, WHO and UNICEF are calling on governments to protect and promote women’s access to skilled breastfeeding counselling, a critical component of breastfeeding support.

Breastfeeding provides every child with the best possible start in life. It delivers health, nutritional and emotional benefits to both children and mothers. And it forms part of a sustainable food system. But while breastfeeding is a natural process, it is not always easy. Mothers need support – both to get started and to sustain breastfeeding.

Skilled counselling services can ensure that mothers and families receive this support, along with the information, the advice, and the reassurance they need to nourish their babies optimally. Breastfeeding counselling can help mothers to build confidence while respecting their individual circumstances and choices. Counselling can empower women to overcome challenges and prevent feeding and care practices that may interfere with optimal breastfeeding, such as the provision of unnecessary liquids, foods, and breastmilk substitutes to infants and young children.

Improving access to skilled counselling for breastfeeding can extend the duration of breastfeeding and promote exclusive breastfeeding, with benefits for babies, families and economies. Indeed, analysis indicates that increasing rates of exclusive breastfeeding could save the lives of 820 000 children every year, generating US $302 billion in additional income.

Skilled breastfeeding counselling can be provided by different actors including health care professionals, lactation counsellors and peer support providers, and in a variety of settings– in health facilities or clinics, through home visits or community programmes, in person or remotely. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it is even more important to find innovative solutions to ensure that access to these essential services is not disrupted and that families continue to receive the breastfeeding counselling they need.

This is why UNICEF and WHO, in line with the policy actions advocated by the UNICEF-WHO-led Global Breastfeeding Collective, are calling on governments to:

INVEST to make skilled breastfeeding counselling available to every woman. Ensuring availability of skilled breastfeeding counselling to every woman will require increased financing for breastfeeding programmes and improved monitoring and implementation of policies, programmes and services.

TRAIN health care workers, including midwives and nurses, to deliver skilled breastfeeding counselling to mothers and families.

ENSURE that counselling is made available as part of routine health and nutrition services that are easily accessible.

PARTNER and collaborate with civil society and health professional associations, building strong collaborative systems for provision of appropriate counselling.

PROTECT health care workers from the influence of the baby food industry.
Together, through commitment, concerted action and collaboration, we can ensure that every mother has access to skilled breastfeeding counselling, empowering her to give her baby the best possible start in life.

Activities to protect, promote and support of breastfeeding

World Breastfeeding Week 2020 (#WBW2020) will highlights the links between breastfeeding and planetary health. The interconnected nature of people and the planet requires that we must find sustainable solutions that benefit both. We can reduce our carbon and ecological footprints starting with how we feed our babies. During this week, we can conduct following activities to protect, promote and support of breastfeeding;

breastfedingSDGs as a framework for planetary health

  • Align national & international policies and guidance on breastfeeding & Infant and young child feeding (IYCF) with the SDG agenda & other environment/climate initiatives.
  • Ensure that a public health perspective is taken to strengthen Baby-friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) & breastfeeding counselling among the general population including during emergencies.
  • Raise awareness among decision-makers to recognise the contribution of breastfeeding to food security & environmental sustainability.
  • Advocate for policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions from the BMS industry.
  • Ensure that the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes & relevant WHA resolutions are fully implemented & monitored.
  • Enact paid family leave & workplace breastfeeding policies based on the ILO Maternity Protection Convention C183 as the minimum standard.

Societal support

  • Advocate for increased financing, monitoring & implementation of better policies & interventions to provide families the support for breastfeeding that they need, especially breastfeeding counselling.
  • Inform communities about the impact of formula feeding on the environment using a variety of communication techniques and influencers.
  • Sensitise journalists and the media to stimulate public debate on the links between breastfeeding & the environment/climate change.
  • Allocate resources for additional research on the climate/environmental impact of BMS.
  • Collect systematic data on the impact of different IYCF policies & programmes in emergency situations.

 

Breastfeeding counselling is essential

  • Advocate for all women/parents with young children to have access to skilled breastfeeding counselling from health facilities & communities.
  • Implement the revised BFHI 2018 guidelines in all health facilities including private hospitals.
  • Allocate resources for community groups to be able to provide basic breastfeeding counselling & other forms of support close to women/parents.

 

Ongoing support across the first 1000 days
  • Advocate for ongoing antenatal & postnatal breastfeeding counselling contact to sustain optimal breastfeeding.
  • Create a warm chain of support for breastfeeding by identifying key actors & their roles in the first 1000 days and linking them to each other.
  • Engage fathers/partners & family support to share domestic responsibilities & care for the breastfeeding dyad.
  • Join a mother/parent support group & share experiences with others in the community to normalise breastfeeding.
  • Develop creative ideas for virtual & online activities to engage target audiences in #WBW 2020.
Building knowledge and skills at all levels
  • Invest in consistent training programmes for different levels of health professionals, lactation consultants, community health workers & lay/peer supporters.
  • Advocate for placement of appropriately-trained & skilled staff at various levels: peer supporters, health professionals, lactation consultants and resource persons.
  • Promote scaling up of existing breastfeeding training tools and programmes including online, digital & e-learning methods, as well as face-to-face clinical & other practical teaching.
  • Engage school children, students, youth & social media influencers to spread awareness of the importance of breastfeeding for planetary health.

Leaving no one behind

  • Promote the use of evidence-based international IYCF guidelines to develop national action plans & communication messages.
  • Ensure that breastfeeding protection, promotion & support is specifically included in national emergency-preparedness & response plans.
  • Inform all health workers, community groups & the public about the importance of breastfeeding in national- & community preparedness plans.
  • Reinforce support for breastfeeding families that targets all members of the family & the community by developing appropriate & consistent communication messages.
  • Emphasise hand expression of breastmilk, appropriate use of breastpumps where safe, correct breastmilk storage & preparation, cup feeding, techniques to maintain breast milk supply, relactation & wet nursing.
  • Ensure that donor human milk is available for babies who need   it through human milk banks or other appropriate community initiatives.

The Right Here Right Now (RHRN) program aims to improve the protection, respect and fulfilment of the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of young people. The program is implemented in 10 low- and middle-income countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and in the Caribbean sub-region. The activities focus on: freedom from stigma, discrimination and violence; access to comprehensive youth-friendly services; access to comprehensive information; and space for young people’s voices. At the global level, the program is a strategic partnership between Rutgers, the Asian-Pacific Resource and Research Centre for Women (ARROW), CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality (CHOICE), Dance4life, HIVOS, International Planned Parenthood Federation African Region (IPPF AR), the Latin American and Caribbean Women’s Health Network (LACWHN) and the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Program Brief

RHRN Nepal platform is a unique partnership model among 15 diverse civil society organizations (CSOs) and networks based in five districts that is committed to joint national and sub-national including regional and global advocacy on issues around legalization of Marriage Equality, Safe Abortion and Comprehensive Sexuality Education.

YUWA serves as the platform host for this strategic partnership, which is a youth-led and youth-run organization. The platform secretariat is responsible for sub-granting and all the administrative and financial management of the overall project.

We are looking for a qualified individual, who will develop a detailed CSE curricula for grade 1-12 based on the draft CSE curricula Framework which will be provided by YUWA.

(P.S. please note by detailed curriculum we mean the development of a document which explains the content of the framework in detail i.e. similar to a text book)

Time Frame

The total contract time will be for 40 days i.e. August 10th, 2020 to September 18th, 2020

Deliverables

Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) consultant is expected to deliver the following by the specified deadline i.e. within the contract period:

  • Review the CSE curriculum framework
  • Finalize the CSE curriculum framework
  • Draft and finalize the detailed curriculum in both Nepali and English
Roles and responsibilities
  • Critically analyze current Sexuality Education curriculum with regards to ITGSE
  • Conduct FGDs, KII, meetings with relevant stakeholder
  • Facilitate meetings and consultations with YUWA, CSE working group under Right
  • Here Right Now Nepal and relevant government and non-government stakeholders
  • Review the CSE curriculum framework developed by YUWA.
  • Draft and finalized detailed CSE Curricula for Grade 1-12 (both in Nepali and
  • English)
Essential and Relevant Experience
  • Bachelors or advanced university degree in social sciences or relevant discipline (10 points)
  • 3-5 years of working experience in Comprehensive Sexuality Education. (20 points)
  • Works from a Human Rights Based approach and Evidence Based Approach (10 points)
  • Has a progressive stance on sexual and reproductive health and rights, specifically young people’s sexual rights and diversity (20 points)
  • Is youth-friendly and has non-discriminatory attitudes towards working with young people (15 points)
  • Strong writing skills with ability to present in a style that is accessible to readers (15 points)
  • Proficiency both in English and Nepali (10 points)

The SEAOHUN Small Grants Program 2020

The SEAOHUN Small Grants Program aims to support One Health faculty in development of new research and training that can have high impact. It is expected that Small Grants will catalyze innovative research, curriculum development and training implementation. This initiative is critical to further support member countries’ activities, increase SEAOHUN’s visibility, and the visibility of One Health Workforce Next Generation project with the support of USAID. In addition, it strives to foster multisectoral collaboration, as well as cooperation across Universities and country networks. The proposals can address broad spectrum of ideas related to One Health approach, enabling better response to the increasingly complex dilemmas at the convergence of animals, humans, plants, and the environment.

Objective

​The SEAOHUN Small Grants Program Objective is to enable faculty members of the member country networks to develop innovative ideas and implement pilot projects that advance training and education on prioritized One Health core competencies and technical skills.

Proposal informations

  • The Small Grants projects must be implemented in six months starting no later than October 2020

  • The total amount of the proposal should not exceed 10,000 USD.

Requirements

  • Be submitted by the SEAOHUN faculty members from its member universities 
  • (Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam) expansion countries ( Myanmar).
  • The proposal should address specific challenges within a broad spectrum of topics related to One Health.
  • The applicants have to prepare robust safety measures plan in line with  WHO recommendations on COVID-19, USAID COVID-19 Guidance for Implementing Partners, and national government recommendations.
  • Priority will be given to Small Grants Program applications that promote a collaborative approach by linking two or more researchers in different disciplines and/or different universities within the network.
  • All proposals must be in English.
Proposal Assessment Criteria 
  • Importance of the challenge addressed by the project.

  • Innovativeness of the solutions, proposed by the project, that meet priority One Health challenges.

  • The logic flow between the project’s problem, goal, objectives, activities, and results. Feasibility of the implementation plan

  • Does this project promote collaboration? Proposals that build, support, and coordinate with the OHUNs will be prioritized.

  • Proposals that foster multi-sectoral engagement and are multidisciplinary will be prioritized.

  • If the proposal includes in-person activities, are they supplemented with a robust safety measures plan in line with WHO recommendations on COVID-19?

  • Cost-effectiveness and well-defined budget.

  • The potential value of the product, resulting from the small grant. Can it be scaled up in the country? Can this product be used by other countries? Can it be disseminated as best practices across One Health community? Can this product be used for evidence-based advocacy with governments?

World Breastfeeding Week

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every 1-7 August in commemoration of the 1990 Innocenti Declaration. WBW started in 1992, with annual themes including healthcare systems, women and work, the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes, community support, ecology, economy, science, education and human rights. Since 2016, WBW is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2018, a World Health Assembly resolution endorsed WBW as an important breastfeeding promotion strategy.

World Breastfeeding Week 2020

World Breastfeeding Week 2020 (#WBW2020) highlights the links between breastfeeding and planetary health. #WBW2020 will focus on the impact of infant feeding on the environment/climate change and the imperative to protect, promote and support breastfeeding for the health of the planet and its people. The theme will highlights the links between breastfeeding and the environment/climate change.

Objectives of World Breastfeeding week

  • INFORM people about the links between breastfeeding and the environment/climate change
  • ANCHOR breastfeeding as a climate-smart decision
  • ENGAGE with individuals and organisations for greater impact
  • GALVANISE action on improving the health of the planet and people through breastfeeding.

 

Call to action

As part of the Global Breastfeeding Collective, UNICEF joins the call for increased financing and better implementation of policies, programmes and interventions to provide mothers the support they need to breastfeed.

Governments can take seven actions to drive progress on breastfeeding and raise the global rate of exclusive breastfeeding to at least 50 per cent by 2025:

  • Increase funding to raise the rate of breastfeeding from birth to 2 years.
  • Adopt and monitor the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes.
  • Enact paid family leave and workplace breastfeeding policies.
  • Implement the ‘Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding’ in maternity facilities.
  • Improve access to skilled breastfeeding counselling in health facilities.
  • Strengthen links between health facilities and communities to support breastfeeding.
  • Monitor the progress of policies, programmes and funding for breastfeeding.

World Hepatitis Day 2020: “Hepatitis-free future”

World Hepatitis Day (WHD) is commemorated each year on 28 July to enhance awareness of viral hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver that causes a range of health problems, including liver cancer. WHD takes places every year on 28 July bringing the world together under a single theme to raise awareness of the global burden of viral hepatitis and to influence real change.

There are five main strains of the hepatitis virus – A, B, C, D and E. Together, hepatitis B and C are the most common cause of deaths, with 1.3 million lives lost each year. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, viral hepatitis continues to claim thousands of lives every day.

Facts

  • 325 million people are living with viral hepatitis B and C
  • 900,000 deaths per year caused by hepatitis B virus infection
  • 10 % of people living with hepatitis B and 19% living with hepatitis C know their hepatitis status
  • 42 % of children, globally, have access to the birth dose of the hepatitis B vaccine

 

Theme

This year’s theme is “Hepatitis-free future,” with a strong focus on preventing hepatitis B among mothers and newborns. 

 

Key actions

WHO is calling on all countries to work together to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030

 
 
  • PREVENT infection among newborns.  All newborns should be vaccinated against hepatitis B at birth, followed by at least 2 additional doses.
  • STOP TRANSMISSION from MOTHER to CHILD. All pregnant women should be routinely tested for hepatitis B, HIV and syphilis and receive treatment if needed.
  • LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND. Everyone should have access to hepatitis prevention, testing and treatment services, including people who inject drugs, people in prisons, migrants, and other highly-affected populations.

Call for young, independent scholars to join Global Young Academy (GYA)

The Global Young Academy (GYA) is an international organization of young researchers with members from six continents. Members are elected for five-year terms. Each member is expected to participate in the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the GYA and to actively contribute to one or more of the organisation’s programmes. This includes participation, e.g., in policy development, promotion of the National Young Academies, or promoting science and education at the international level.

The GYA is a global organisation that places a high value on its diversity. We encourage applications from all qualified candidates. All applicants receive consideration and will not be discriminated against with regard to race, colour, ethnicity, religion, creed, sex, marital status, ancestry, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, physical or mental disabilities, or other factors. We especially encourage women and applicants from different minority groups, and from diverse disciplines including the natural, physical and social sciences as well as the arts and humanities and people working in government, industry, and non-governmental sectors to apply.

Research fields

The call is open to all scholars working in any research-based discipline, including the natural, physical and social sciences, as well as the arts and humanities.

Excellence

Applicants must be able to demonstrate a high level of excellence in their discipline, ascertained by a proven track record and expected future achievements. Moreover, applicants must demonstrate a clear commitment to making a difference in society. PhD or equivalent is a requirement for applicants.

Impact

The Global Young Academy is committed to a broad range of programmes around the world to support young scholars, promote science to a broad audience, engage in policy debate, and foster international and interdisciplinary collaboration. Applicants should provide evidence of interest or experience in one or more of these areas.

Age/career point: Applicants should be in the early to middle years of their independent careers, i.e. approximately 7 years from PhD and aged 30-40. Applicants falling outside these ranges are still invited to send their applications with a justification for why they should be considered.

Expectations

Each GYA member is expected to attend the GYA Annual General Meeting each year and is also expected to actively contribute to one or more of the organisation’s programmes, which include participation in policy development, promotion of National Young Academies, supporting science outreach and education at the national and international levels, and the young scientist ambassador programme. The GYA is an active organisation, and being a member requires a time commitment on each member’s part. In the event that applicants are selected as new GYA members, they should be available to attend the next Annual General Meeting, which is scheduled for 16 – 21 May 2021 in Japan.

The School of Human and Health Sciences is one of seven academic schools within the University of Huddersfield. The School has a long tradition of providing high quality education and research. The School prides itself on the quality of its teaching, facilities, research and its partnerships with a wide range of regional, national and international stakeholders. Our high-quality education has also been confirmed by professional, statutory and regulatory bodies. The School itself has approximately 3,200 undergraduate students, 1,230 postgraduate taught students and over 230 postgraduate research students. There are approximately 190 academic and 85 administrative, professional clerical and technical staff. The School is accommodated across 3 locations on the Queensgate Campus in the centre of Huddersfield; Ramsden Building, Harold Wilson Building and the Edith Key Building. The School of Human and Health Sciences announces vacancy for the position of Senior Research Fellow.

The School of Human and Health Sciences at the University of Huddersfield is looking to appoint a Senior Research Fellow to join an exciting research project examining the consequences for the health system of Nepal’s move to a federal government structure. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of researchers working on a project funded by the MRC, Wellcome Trust and DFID under the Health Systems Research Initiative. The project is a collaboration between researchers at the Universities of Sheffield, Bournemouth and Huddersfield in the UK and the Manmohan Memorial Institute of Health Science and PHASE Nepal in Kathmandu. This project will track, in real time, the massive health system reform process underway in Nepal as a result of the implementation of its new Constitution; in particular the shift to a Federal government system.

This is a two-year project working under the supervision of Prof. Padam Simkhada, Associate Dean International and Professor of Global Health in the School of Human and Health Sciences at Huddersfield University.

The successful applicant will have completed a PhD with at least five years post-doctoral experience and possess good quantitative and qualitative research skills. The candidate must have good understanding of Nepal’s health system and working knowledge and skills on Nepali languages. This is a UK based position which will require frequent visits to Nepal for research activities.

The role is based in the School of Human and Health Sciences at the University of Huddersfield, UK, however, requires frequent travel to Nepal for research activities.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide overall management of the research project
  2. Undertake the interpretation, evaluation and criticism of existing literature
  3. Critically evaluate and interpret data
  4. Plan, execute and manage a range of research methods appropriate to the research area
  5. Prepare material for peer reviewed publication
  6. Carry out administrative tasks associated with the project or funding, for example, risk assessment, organisation of project meetings and documentation
  7. Carry out undergraduate and postgraduate supervision within the postholder’s area of expertise
  8. Complete research grant reports and funding applications
  9. Contribute pro-actively to the generation of plans and strategies to conduct efficient research
  10. Provide management and supervision of research and support staff, where required
  11. Participate in team meetings and committees, including University committees, as appropriate
  12. Maintain high professional and ethical standards and operate in compliance with legislation and the University’s policies and regulations.
  13. Undertake other duties directed by the Research Leader or Co-Investigator.
