Fogarty Launching Future Leaders in Global Health Research Training Program

by Public Health Update

Overview

The INSIGHT consortia is one of many consortia that comprise the Fogarty Launching Future Leaders in Global Health Research Training Program. The purpose of the Fogarty programs is to provide mentored global health research training opportunities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) for pre-and post-doctoral candidates from the U.S. and LMICs. The program is sponsored by the Fogarty International Center (FIC) and several collaborating Institutes and Centers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

This consortium brings together four top-ranked universities, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB)Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB), and the University of Pittsburgh (UP) and their respective international research training sites in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Trainee research projects are supported by experienced and dedicated mentors with expertise in clinical, public health, laboratory, and implementation research.

Fellowship Training Program

To help train and foster the next generation of global health scientists, the Fogarty International Center and its partners at the National Institutes of Health have funded four consortia of universities to administer 12-month clinical research training programs.

The INSIGHT program partnership includes the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB), and the University of Pittsburgh (UP).

The program aims to provide the next generation of aspiring global health researchers in the U.S. and in LMIC by giving scientists, early in their careers, a mentored research training experience in global health at established biomedical and behavioral research sites.

In 1998, these institutions were among the first implementers of the Fogarty AIDS International Training and Research Program (AITRP) having provided research training that has strengthened the capacity of academic and research institutions and of research scientists globally.

Research Tracks

Our program has four Disease Tracks, four Population Tracks, and three Science Tracks that underpin the global health research and priority needs of our partner LMIC institutions. The specific activities and steering committee of the tracks can be accessed by selecting a research track below.
