At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Global Health and Primary care, a full-time (100 %) position as postdoctoral research fellow is available from January 1, 2025, for a period of three (3) years (four years if one year is spent abroad at an international institution). The position is located at BCEPS, a new Centre of Excellence (SFF), and the position is funded by the University of Bergen.

About the project/work tasks:

The Fellow will work with the Rationing Lab at BCEPS led by Professor Zeke Emanuel and Professor Ole F. Norheim. The Rationing Lab aims to explore how implementing different ethical principles and priority setting criteria would affect population wellbeing. The Lab aims to develop a general ethical framework for priority setting that integrates utilitarian, egalitarian and prioritarian principles. In addition, the Lab will elaborate a new procedural approach for implementing models of priority setting. 

  • The Fellow will be instrumental in helping the Lab achieve these goals, and a research plan will be developed in collaboration between the Fellow and the Lab leads. 
  • The Fellow is expected to publish high-quality papers and initiate new innovative projects relevant for BCEPS

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within medicine, epidemiology, philosophy, ethics, political science, or economics, or have the doctoral thesis submitted prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded and at the latest within 5 months after the closing date for applications. 
  • Experience from relevant research projects in political philosophy, economics or health and climate change is a requirement 
  • The candidate should be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others. 
  • Proficiency in both written and oral English is a requirement Special requirements for the position:
    Good understanding of ethical theory and key principles for priority setting in health is required

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. You cannot be employed as a postdoctoral fellow for more than one fixed term period at the same institution. The employee may be assigned required duties in the form of teaching and similar work at the department.

The fixed term period for the position is three years, with the possibility of an extension of the period with up to one year if a research-related stay abroad shall be included in the employment period. See regulations for appointments to Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Research Fellow etc
