WHO Launches, WHO Academy and the WHO Info mobile applications

WHO announces the launch of the WHO Academy app designed to support health workers during COVID-19, and the WHO Info app designed to inform the general public.
Today, the WHO Academy, World Health Organization’s lifelong learning centre, launched a mobile app designed to enable health workers to expand their life-saving skills to battle the COVID-19 pandemic. The app provides health workers with mobile access to a wealth of COVID-19 knowledge resources, developed by WHO, that include up-to-the-minute guidance, tools, training, and virtual workshops that will help them care for COVID-19 patients and protect themselves.

“With this new mobile app, the WHO is putting the power of learning and knowledge-sharing directly into the hands of health workers everywhere,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.

The app is built around the needs expressed by 20,000 global health workers in a WHO Academy survey conducted in March of 2020.

The survey found that two-thirds of respondents feel they need to be more prepared, particularly in infection prevention and control, case management, use of personal protective equipment and occupational safety, and risk communication and community engagement.

An overwhelming majority of respondents said virtual learning on demand would be helpful in preparing for COVID-19 challenges.

The establishment of the WHO Academy, based in Lyon, France, is planned for launch in May 2021. The state-of-the-art lifelong learning centre, will apply the latest technologies and adult learning science to meet the learning needs of millions of health workers, policy makers, and WHO staff around the world.

The application is available for free download from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in Arabic Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

You can also learn more about the WHO Academy here: http://academy.who.int

The WHO Info app.

Also today, WHO will launch the WHO Info app which will give millions of people real-time mobile access to the latest news and developments. WHO has developed the app from the ground up with an intuitive user-interface and a clean, smart design. From the COVID-19 front, the WHO Info app will provide the latest WHO initiatives, partnerships, and to up-to-date information on the race to find medicines and vaccines for fighting the disease. The number of COVID-19 cases, organized by country, and by timelines, are continually updated in the app from the official WHO COVID-19 data streams.

The WHO Info app is available for free download from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store

Also, new measures and impacts are introduced – especially during this quarantine, it impact on many people’s usual activities, routines or livelihood. Level of loneliness, self-harm or suicidal behavior are also expected to rise. The new realities of working from home, temporary unemployment , lack of physical contact with others family members, friends and colleagues take time to get used to and might seems unusual which may leads towards psychological imbalance.

Recommended: Mental health and psychosocial considerations during the COVID-19 outbreak

Making sure that you take care of your mental health is vital.

There are lots of things we can do to look after our mental health as-

  • Stick with daily routines as far as possible, or make new ones.
  • Seek information only from trusted sources at specific time.
  • Limit the amount of alcohol or don’t drink at all. Avoid using them as the way of dealing with fear, boredom, anxiety and social isolation.
  • Enjoy your hobbies. Take time to engage in relaxing activities like, reading a book, cooking a nice meal, or doing something creative like painting knitting.
  • Take a few regular break from your chores or onscreen tasks.
  • Find opportunities to share and amplify positive and hopeful stories.
  • Stay connected and stay in touch with your family, friends and relatives you haven’t spoken to in a while and be able to lean on each other for emotional support.
  • Consider some stretches or yoga or engaging in a short mindfulness activities.
  • Take opportunities online or through your community to thank your country’s health care workers and all those working to respond COVID-19.

Is Lockdown a Solution? | Asbin Ghimire

Is Lockdown a Solution?

Asbin Ghimire

Countries put stringent measure in place called Lockdown in response to transmission of COVID-19. Many have used the time to ramp up their activity to test, address, isolate and care for patient which is the best way to trace the virus, slow its spread and take pressure off from the Government Health System. The good news is that there has been a great deal of success in slowing the virus spread and ultimately saving lives of millions. Until there is vaccine to be found to eradicate virus, the comprehensive package of measure i.e. Lockdown is our most effective set of tool to slow down the consequences of virus.

Recommended: COVID-19 fallout could push half a billion people into poverty in developing countries

In countries with poverty and high population, the stay-at-home orders and other restrictions used may not be practical because residents living in crowded quarters, need to work daily in order to survive and receive meals in regular interval. Serious socio-economical lock down have a detrimental effect on daily life of people. With no source of education and no savings for future, majority of people of high labor induced countries depend upon the daily wages they receive at the end of the day after hard labor. Therefore to protect lives and livelihood of these people, a slow steady and lifting of lock down is key to sustain their economy and lifestyle.

Related: Effects of COVID-19 Pandemic in Daily Life of Nepalese People

However, such strong measure comes at a cost. Physical distancing restrictions are only part of the equation for this Lockdown and there are many other basic public health measures that need to be put in place which makes Lockdown effective. When stay-at-home measures are used, there must not be the violence of human rights. Each government must access their situation while protecting all their citizens, especially the most vulnerable. So government officials must rise from their internal disputes and fight as one for a better cause ie. consequences of this pandemic. Government should protect its people from this economical breakdown, secure their future as well as  keep a vigilant eye on the virus so control measure can be quickly implemented if an upswing in case is identified.

Even if a country wants to lift the lockdown, government must ask itself if the healthcare system is able to cope with a resurgence of cases after initiating certain measure or not. Is the optical surveillance system able to detect and manage contacts and cases of identified resurgence of cases is another question to be considered before country slowly can uplift the Lockdown. However are these questions and answers enough to remove it? Government must understand and analyze the situation of recurring pandemic for second time on some country like Republic Of Korea, Wuhan region of China and some area of Germany which are facing second wave of pandemic even though high preventive measures were taken. WHO is working closely with Government to ensure that public measures remain in place to deal with the challenges of lifting Lockdown.

COVID-19 Dashboard by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE)

Asking people to stay at home and shutting down their movement is buying time and reducing the pressure on health system, yet these measures on their own will not extinguish pandemics. WHO said that “Lockdown alone won’t be enough, how many more is decided on the basis of decision we make and action we take”. If we want to remove Lockdown in gradual way, restrictions need to be lifted slowly and strategically in order to successfully re-enter a new normal life. If the measures are not enough to slow down the spread of virus after uplifting Lockdown, we might face the harsh reality of pandemic and its consequences much more than we can possibly imagine. In a nutshell surveillance, case finding, contact tracing campaign to inform affected population solidarity is needed now more than ever to defeat COVID-19.

(More: WHO Dashboard) The whole world is focused to mitigate this problematic situation. Nearly, all the country round the globe has imposed lockdown to restrict the mobility of their situation to reduce the transmission of the virus. Public Health practitioners are working as in-charge in community, national, sub-continental and global health to minimize health impact of COVID-19.

In this article, we will present you ten innovative ideas that you can do during lockdown.

As a public health student, you sure have the idea of the virus epidemiology and modes of transmission. You would already have discovered that “Lockdown” is only alternative to fight against COVID-19 pandemic in developing country as we lack enough medicinal technology and equipment to provide curative for the infected ones. Similarly, it is responsible of Public Health Students to obey this lockdown religiously and also advocate in community level maintaining social distance or digitally.

2. Bust myths and circulate facts

Along with the COVID-19 pandemic, we have encountered various myth heavily circulated across the social media and internet. We should be responsible and aware enough to distinguish as myth or facts. Also, only message and news from verified sources such as MOHP, WHO CDC etc, should be shared. [You can take online quiz to aware yourself about myths of COVID-19 at : https://bit.ly/34D1tmG ]

3. Stay up-to-date about COVID-19 news.

Public Health is dynamic phenomenon; hence it is expected that a public health should be up-to-date about COVID cases and news of their nation and worldwide. 4. Attend/Organize Awareness Competition

We all are aware that education spreads through interaction. If you are part of some organization and clubs you can organize various art/poster/quiz/painting/song/poem competition targeting different audience spreading positive vibes in this lockdown. For instance, Climate Action, TB Free World, Digital Studios have organized various competition for COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the competition award certificates, prizes while some offer E-certificates. Along with the course, you could educate yourself about various health phenomenon and features. The continuous habit of studying will surely aid for your exam preparation.
