Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is an increasing public health threat in Nepal. The AMR Bulletin FY 2081/82 highlights Nepal’s multisectoral efforts to tackle this challenge through a One Health approach, integrating human health, animal health, food systems, and environmental sectors.
With an estimated 4,710 deaths directly attributed to AMR in 2021 and nearly 19,600 associated deaths, coordinated action is critical.
Nepal’s National Action Plan on AMR (2080/81–2084/85) focuses on five strategic priorities:
- Improving awareness through communication and education
- Strengthening surveillance and research
- Reducing infections through effective prevention and control (IPC)
- Optimizing antimicrobial use across sectors
- Ensuring sustainable resources, innovation, and research
Key progress
Key progress includes expanding laboratory surveillance, restricting misuse of critical antibiotics, banning antibiotics as growth promoters in animal feed, strengthening infection prevention systems, and increasing awareness through national campaigns and professional training.
These integrated actions reflect Nepal’s strong commitment to protecting the effectiveness of antimicrobials and safeguarding public health through collaboration across sectors.
