Overview
Health economists from universities from around the globe have developed an online course to strengthen skills related to economics and financing of national immunization programs and to improve the sustainability of vaccine delivery in low and middle-income countries.
The experts represent the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Mahidol University, University of Ouagadougou, WITS School of Public Health, Indian Institute of Hospital Management Research (IIHMR) University, Aga Khan University, and Makerere University.
Course date and target peoples
The course, to be conducted from October 17–December 13, 2020, is designed for professionals and academics who are involved in the planning and implementation of immunization programs and projects. The target audience includes government representatives (national, state-level, district level) engaged with immunization, NITAG members, GAVI program managers, other policymakers, and academics.
Course structure
The students will learn the basics of vaccine economics, methodology, and applications of different types of costing and economic evaluation studies, and its relevance to decision-making and policy implementation. The course consists of four units:
Unit 1—Vaccine Economics in Health Systems
Introduction to key theories and concepts of health economics and financing as it pertains to immunization. Real-world examples and applications to COVID-19 will be discussed.
Unit 2—Costing of Immunization Programs
Apply costing methodology to routine immunization programs, and for the introduction of new and underutilized vaccines immunizations (NUVI).
Unit 3—Economic Evaluation of Vaccines and Immunization
Programs Design and develop economic models to provide evidence and communicate value during the decision-making process. Models using real-world examples and COVID-19 will be discussed.
Unit 4—Applying Economics to the COVID-19 Vaccine
Locally Student will develop and present a project proposal focusing on the usage of health economics in the implementation of the COVID-19 vaccine.
Application process
