Call for applications for PhD position

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care (IGS), a full-time PhD-position is available for a period of four (4) years or max 4 months after completed the PhD-degree, if this is achieved within a shorter time than four years. The positions include 25 % required duties such as teaching, exam work or supervision, depending on the demands at the department.

The position is available from 1 January 2024 and is located at Bergen Centre for Ethics and Priority Setting in Health (BCEPS), a new Research Council of Norway Centre of Excellence (SFF). The position is funded by the University of Bergen.

BCEPS has an extensive network of international collaborative partners, including universities, international organisations and national ministries of health.

UiB encourages international exchange, and research can be carried out in collaboration with and with time spent at the University of Pennsylvania.

About the project/work tasks:

  • Write a PhD (three publications in peer- reviewed journals) on the topic of ethics and priority setting in health.
  • The candidate will work for the Rationing Lab at BCEPS led by professors Zeke Emanuel (University of Pennsylvania) and Ole F. Norheim (University of Bergen).
  • The Rationing Lab aims to develop a general ethical framework for priority setting that integrates utilitarian, egalitarian and prioritarian principles. In addition, the Lab will elaborate a new procedural approach for implementing models of priority setting.
  • The PhD candidate will help the Lab achieve these goals, and a PhD protocol will be developed in collaboration with the Lab leads. Short bullet point description.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a master`s degree or equivalent in medicine, philosophy, ethics, political science, or economics.
  • We are especially interested in people whose area of interest include political philosophy and democratic theory.
  • Experience from relevant research projects will be considered an advantage.
  • The candidate should have the ability to work independently and in a structured manner, with good collaborative skills.
  • The candidate must have the ability and motivation to carry out a PhD project.
  • The applicant must be fluent in spoken and written English, see documentation requirements.

The candidate must take part in the University of Bergen approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. You must have admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the Faculty in order to qualify for the position. Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.
